Labor shortages in two key sectors, hospitality and agriculture, have led the Trump administration to modify its policy of mass deportations of migrants in the United States.

According to The New York Times, the federal government has ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to largely pause raids and arrests of employees at hotels, restaurants, and farms.

The order reached regional ICE officials on Thursday in an email stating that they may continue arrests in cases involving “human trafficking, money laundering, and drug trafficking,” but not for migrants with no record of criminal activity.

President Donald Trump himself admitted last week that his immigration policy was affecting two of the economic sectors he wanted to maintain support for. “Our great farmers and the people in the hotel and leisure industry have been saying that our aggressive immigration policy is taking away very good, long-time workers, and that those jobs are almost impossible to replace,” he said on social media.
