WTTC and UNEP Launch Strategic Partnership to Accelerate Sustainable Tourism

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation on advancing sustainability across the global Travel & Tourism sector. The partnership combines UNEP's environmental expertise with WTTC's network of leading travel companies to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable, circular and resilient tourism industry.

Turning sustainability commitments into action

The agreement focuses on supporting businesses in implementing internationally recognised sustainability frameworks and expanding participation in global environmental initiatives. Priority areas include circular economy solutions, biodiversity conservation, sustainable food systems and reducing plastic pollution.

A key element of the partnership is the creation of structured opportunities for WTTC Members to participate voluntarily in UNEP's flagship sustainability programmes, particularly those addressing environmental action, plastics and food waste. The initiative is designed to help companies move more quickly from sustainability commitments to measurable results.

Joint leadership on global tourism policy

WTTC and UNEP will also work together to strengthen advocacy efforts and contribute to the development of international tourism policies that support sustainable industry growth. The cooperation includes a structured work programme with jointly agreed priorities, regular high-level coordination, technical working meetings and annual reviews to ensure effective implementation.

In addition, both organisations plan to increase their joint presence at international events and expand knowledge sharing between the United Nations system and the private sector.

Broad sustainability agenda

Under the agreement, WTTC and UNEP will collaborate on promoting nature-positive and regenerative tourism, advancing circular economy practices, reducing food waste, improving water stewardship, increasing resource efficiency, supporting ocean and coastal conservation, and encouraging sustainable food systems. The partnership will also include capacity-building programmes, pilot projects and technical cooperation to help businesses implement best practices.

"Travel & Tourism is one of the world's most effective forces for sustainable development. Through this partnership with UNEP, we are bringing together global leadership, industry expertise and practical action to help businesses accelerate environmental action, reduce waste, protect biodiversity and create lasting positive impact for destinations and communities. Together, we can ensure that the growth of Travel & Tourism goes hand in hand with a planet that sustains great travel experiences," said Gloria Guevara, President & CEO of WTTC.

Partnership through 2028

The agreement will remain in effect until June 2028. Throughout this period, WTTC and UNEP will support the partnership through regular strategic dialogue, technical exchanges and collaborative initiatives aimed at delivering practical environmental benefits for businesses, destinations and local communities worldwide.
