As
part of its Proudly Committed sustainability strategy, RIU Hotels & Resorts
has introduced a new service to predict and calculate the carbon footprint of
events held at its flagship MICE property, Riu Plaza España in Madrid.
Developed
in collaboration with sustainability tech platform CREAST, the tool uses AI and
historical consumption data to provide clients with an estimated carbon
footprint at the event planning stage. Once the event concludes, a detailed
final report is issued, offering full traceability of emissions generated.
The
initiative supports greater transparency and encourages clients to make more
sustainable choices when organizing meetings and conferences. The system
evaluates variables such as event duration, guest count, room usage, and
services—delivering a clear GHG forecast alongside each event quote.
RIU
has already implemented several green practices at Riu Plaza España, such as
filtered water systems to reduce plastic waste. The company is exploring a
wider rollout of the carbon calculation service at other MICE-focused hotels in
its portfolio.
RIU
has cut its scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 50% in the past two years and
continues to drive sustainable innovation across its operations.
