IHG and GI Capital Management Break Ground on New Regent Kyoto

Designed to blend Kyoto’s rich heritage with contemporary elegance, the project marks the latest chapter in the global expansion of IHG’s upper-luxury Regent brand.

Nestled in the prestigious Okazaki district, known for its historic villas and cultural landmarks, the new hotel will offer 83 refined guest rooms arranged around a central garden originally created by renowned landscape gardener Kumakichi Kato. The development pays tribute to Kato’s enduring legacy, reimagining the site’s natural beauty for a modern era.

The hotel grounds are also home to Tsuruya, one of Kyoto’s most esteemed ‘ryotei’ restaurants, with a century-long tradition of serving dignitaries, nobles, and visiting state guests. Nearby attractions include the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, and Nanzen-ji Temple.

Each guest room will feature a reinterpreted ‘engawa’ – the traditional transitional space between indoors and nature – inviting guests to connect with the gardens and surrounding landscape. This architectural approach reflects Regent’s commitment to serene luxury and understated grandeur.

Regent Kyoto joins a growing portfolio of reimagined Regent properties worldwide, including Regent Santa Monica Beach, Regent Hong Kong, and Regent Shanghai on the Bund. In Japan, IHG currently operates 54 hotels across 10 brands, with 17 additional properties in development.
