A 4.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded on Monday between the southern Aegean Greek islands of Amorgos and Santorini, the latter a major tourist attraction.

The earthquake with a depth of 17.3 kilometers (10.75 miles) struck around 7.21 am local time (0521GMT), according to the National Observatory of Athens Geodynamics Institute.

Seismic activity in the area has led to over 20,000 tremors since late January, including some over 4 or even 5 on the Richter scale.

While experts differ on whether this seismic activity will lead to a stronger quake, state authorities repeatedly stressed they are closely watching developments.

Santorini is one of Greece’s most popular tourist draws.

The tremors are feared to trigger a drop in bookings and loss of tourism income, which the country greatly relies on.
