“This exceptional landscape, once the capital of the Lydian civilization and birthplace of the world’s first coin, is now recognised as part of humanity’s shared heritage,” stated Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy on social media.

Ersoy expressed his gratitude to all those involved in the recognition process and added, “Türkiye’s cultural treasures will continue to come to light during the Century of Türkiye. I invite everyone to experience the enchanting atmosphere of Sardis, now also open for visits under the night museum programme.”

In an official statement, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the inscription, stating: “Sardis and the Lydian Tumuli of Bin Tepe, situated east of Manisa, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 12 July during the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee in Paris.”

With this addition, the total number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Türkiye has risen to 22.
