Tianjin invites travellers to slow down and explore

Only half an hour from Beijing by high-speed train, Tianjin offers travellers a very different urban experience. The Haihe River winds through the centre, historic European-influenced buildings stand alongside neighbourhood restaurants and breakfast stalls, while the Bohai Sea lies beyond the city.

Four Seasons Hotel Tianjin is using this combination of history, everyday life and relaxed urban culture as the basis for a journey through the senses. Located in the heart of the city, the hotel provides a starting point for exploring Tianjin on foot, by bicycle and from the water.

Architecture tells Tianjin’s complex story

Chifeng Road offers an introduction to the city’s architectural diversity. The Baroque-style former residence of Zhang Xueliang recalls an important chapter of modern Chinese history, while nearby Porcelain House combines French-inspired architecture with an elaborate covering of Chinese ceramics.

The Five Great Avenues provide another perspective. Best explored at a leisurely pace by bicycle, the district contains an extensive collection of international architecture. Prince Qing’s Mansion, Munan Mansion and the open space of Minyuan Plaza are among its landmarks.

As evening approaches, visitors can change perspective again with a boat trip on the Haihe. Illuminated bridges and buildings along the riverbanks transform the cityscape after dark.

A quieter side of the city

Back at Four Seasons Hotel Tianjin, the emphasis shifts from exploration to relaxation. L'Océan spa has 11 treatment rooms and offers treatments including a signature Balinese massage using warm oils, flowing movements and stretching techniques.

The hotel has 259 rooms and suites. Interiors combine wood furnishings with pale fabrics, while mattresses incorporating a Gel Touch foam core are designed to dissipate excess heat and maintain a comfortable sleeping temperature.

The atmosphere extends to the hotel’s public areas, from the indoor pool to the lobby and terrace bar, where occasional live music accompanies the evening.

Tianjin begins at the breakfast table

Local cuisine provides another way to discover the city. At the hotel’s Cielo restaurant, breakfast includes jianbing guozi, a mung-bean crêpe wrapped around a crisp cracker and prepared to order.

Another Tianjin speciality is guoba cai, served with a savoury gravy, sesame paste and fermented tofu. Both dishes reflect the robust flavours of the city’s traditional everyday cooking.

Later in the day, Jin House takes a more refined approach to regional flavours. The restaurant combines seasonal local ingredients with techniques associated with Cantonese cuisine, offering dishes ranging from dim sum at lunchtime to soups and more elaborate evening meals.

Exploring without a checklist

The concept reflects a side of Tianjin that can easily be overlooked by visitors concentrating on China’s largest and fastest-moving destinations. Historic neighbourhoods, riverfront walks, food and architecture can all be experienced without covering great distances.

Four Seasons Hotel Tianjin builds its approach around that slower rhythm. Rather than treating the city as a collection of sights to be ticked off, it encourages visitors to move between neighbourhoods, meals and moments of relaxation at a more leisurely pace.

For travellers arriving from Beijing, that contrast may itself be one of Tianjin’s attractions: a major Chinese city close to the capital, but with enough room to slow down and experience it through more than a sightseeing itinerary.
