As travel demand across Greater China continues to
diversify, guest expectations are becoming increasingly nuanced. From city
centres to nature-led destinations, and from short breaks to longer, more
immersive stays, the way people travel and choose accommodation is evolving
rapidly.
Building on its long-standing presence and deep market
knowledge, IHG Hotels & Resorts is set to further strengthen its footprint
in Greater China in 2026. A series of new hotel openings in the first half of
the year will expand IHG’s network across different city tiers and travel
occasions, closely aligned with changing guest needs and preferences.
Daniel Aylmer, CEO of IHG Greater China, said:
“Greater China remains one of IHG’s most important and dynamic markets
globally. We are seeing new ways of travelling emerge, longer and more varied
stay patterns take shape, and guest expectations continue to evolve. In
response, we will continue to grow through a diverse brand portfolio and strong
local operating expertise, delivering high-quality hotels that meet the needs
of different locations, occasions and guest segments. These sustained
investments reflect our long-term commitment to quality growth and lasting
value. Building on five decades in the market, we are entering the next chapter
together with our hotel owners.”
A broad and growing footprint
IHG currently operates 13 brands in Greater China,
with more than 1,400 hotels open or in the pipeline across over 200 cities. The
openings planned for the first half of 2026 underline a more structured and
clearly defined expansion strategy, combining scale with differentiation across
the region.
Locations: from established hubs to emerging cities
As non-tier-one cities gain prominence within the
travel and hospitality landscape, IHG’s upcoming openings will extend further
into tier-one and tier-two cities across Greater China. Supported by its
multi-brand portfolio, the group aims to tailor each property to the
characteristics and demand of its local market.
Among the highlights, TFT Chongqing Vignette
Collection is scheduled to open in the city’s core urban area, strengthening
IHG’s presence in the luxury segment in Southwest China. Other openings in the
first half of 2026 include InterContinental Huzhou South Taihu, Atwell Hefei
Downtown, Holiday Inn Resort Ningbo Ninghai, Holiday Inn Jinan Daming Lake and
Holiday Inn Express Nanjing Confucius Temple, collectively broadening
accommodation choices across a range of destinations.
Occasions: from travel motivation to length of stay
With travel motivations and stay patterns becoming
more diverse, IHG’s new hotels are designed to cater to a wide spectrum of
occasions, from short city breaks and leisure travel to longer urban stays and
frequent city-based trips.
InterContinental Taipei and Holiday Inn Shanghai
Tourism Zone, both set to open in the first half of 2026, are located near key
leisure and entertainment landmarks such as Taipei Dome and Shanghai Disney
Resort. These properties are positioned to serve short-stay, family and
entertainment-driven travel.
At the same time, THE ONE Shanghai Downtown Vignette
Collection, located close to the city’s main commercial and lifestyle
districts, is designed as an urban hub connecting culture and city life,
offering guests a refined yet relaxed metropolitan experience. Kimpton Shanghai
9 Tree Art Center, situated in a suburban short-break destination, provides an
alternative for travellers drawn to nature, arts and culture.
Local character: from cultural inspiration to spatial
expression
Beyond standardised accommodation, many travellers
today seek a stronger emotional connection with the places they visit. Across
its portfolio, IHG continues to integrate local culture into hotel design and
guest experiences through thoughtful spatial storytelling rather than
superficial decoration.
Palm Springs Hotel Chengdu Vignette Collection draws
on traditional Sichuan craftsmanship to reflect the region’s landscape and
cultural heritage in its interior design. Hotel Indigo Chongqing Chaotianmen
incorporates the city’s distinctive topography into its overall concept,
extending local influences across dining, fitness and public spaces. Meanwhile,
voco Beijing Temple of Heaven takes inspiration from Beijing’s historical and
cultural context, weaving local philosophy and heritage into the guestroom experience
to create a strong sense of place in everyday living.
With these openings, IHG Hotels & Resorts
underscores its commitment to quality-led growth in Greater China, combining
scale, brand diversity and local relevance to meet the evolving expectations of
today’s travellers.
