The US Virtual Embassy in Iran has issued an urgent security alert calling on US citizens in Iran to leave the country “now” if possible and to make departure plans that do not rely on assistance from the US government.
Heightened security and travel disruptions
According to the alert, increased security measures are currently affecting daily life across the country. Road closures, disruptions to public transport and widespread internet restrictions are ongoing, while access to mobile, landline and national internet networks remains limited. Airlines continue to cancel or restrict flights to and from Iran, further reducing departure options for foreign nationals.
Advice to leave by land if necessary
In light of these constraints, the embassy advised US citizens to prepare for continued communication outages and to consider alternative means of staying in contact. If it is safe to do so, Americans are encouraged to leave Iran by land, with Armenia and Türkiye cited as possible exit routes.
Risk of questioning or detention
The advisory also warned that US citizens face a significant risk of questioning, arrest or detention in Iran. As a precaution, individuals are urged to avoid demonstrations, keep a low profile and closely monitor the local security situation.
Guidance for those unable to depart
For citizens who are unable to leave, the embassy recommends remaining in a secure location, either within their residence or another safe building. It further advises maintaining sufficient supplies of food, water, medication and other essential items in case conditions deteriorate.
The alert underscores the seriousness of the current situation and urges US nationals to take immediate steps to safeguard their security.
