Istanbul Airport targets luxury aviation with new private terminal - Get updated on what's happening in tourism!

Istanbul Airport is strengthening its position in the international private aviation market with a dedicated premium terminal aimed at high-net-worth travellers. The JETEX-IGA General Aviation Terminal, which opened on 5 May 2026, has already handled around 3,600 private VVIP passengers, according to the facility’s management. Combining aviation services with the amenities of a luxury hotel, the terminal is designed to attract private jet traffic moving between Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Private suites, spa and dedicated lounges

Rather than functioning solely as a conventional general aviation terminal, the new facility incorporates elements more commonly associated with luxury hospitality.

Passengers have access to private suites, a spa and wellness centre, dining and entertainment areas, a conference room and several lounges. The concept is intended to provide private aviation passengers with an enclosed premium environment throughout their arrival, departure or transit experience.

“The JETEX-IGA terminal is unlike any other — it blends luxury aviation with the luxury hospitality sector in terms of comprehensiveness and services, while it’s designed as a very luxurious hotel with private suites, a spa and wellness center, a conference room, dining areas, entertainment spaces, and various lounge areas,” says Burcu Gures, director of the facility.

According to Gures, initial passenger feedback has been positive, with travellers particularly welcoming the availability of this level of private aviation service in Istanbul.

Russia and Central Asia drive demand

Istanbul’s geographical position is playing an important role in the terminal’s early development. Located at one of the world’s major aviation hubs between Europe, the Middle East and Asia, the facility is attracting substantial traffic from Russia, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Russia is emerging as an especially significant source market. The terminal has been tailored in part to the requirements of passengers from Russia and other members of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

“Russia is a very important market for us,” Gures says.

Demand is also strong from the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

European and US travellers add to passenger mix

The clientele is nevertheless broader than these core markets. Turkish customers are using the facility alongside private groups arriving from Europe and the United States.

Corporate and cultural events in Istanbul are another source of private aviation traffic, giving the terminal a role beyond traditional luxury leisure travel.

The approximately 3,600 passengers handled since early May indicate the scale of this highly specialised segment. Unlike conventional airport terminals measured in millions of passengers, general aviation facilities focus on a comparatively small clientele with considerably higher spending levels and more individual service requirements.

Istanbul strengthens its position in ultra-luxury tourism

The JETEX-IGA terminal also forms part of Istanbul’s broader development as a luxury destination. Its combination of private aviation infrastructure and high-end hospitality is intended to make the city more attractive to affluent international visitors while supporting its role as a stopover and meeting point between continents.

According to the terminal’s management, the facility is expected to generate additional economic activity in Istanbul and contribute to the city’s ultra-luxury tourism sector.

For Istanbul Airport, the terminal adds another layer to its international hub strategy: alongside large-scale scheduled passenger traffic, the airport is now seeking a stronger position in the much smaller but economically valuable global private aviation market.
