ASUR passenger traffic falls 2.1% in August as international demand weakens

The airport group handled 5.9 million passengers in August 2026, with growth in Colombia offset by declines in Mexico and Puerto Rico

ASUR handled almost 5.9 million passengers across its airports in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Colombia in August 2026, representing a 2.1% decline compared with the same month last year. The figures reveal contrasting developments across the group’s markets, with Colombian traffic continuing to grow while Mexico was affected by a sharp decline in international passengers.

The figures do not yet include the 20 additional airports that joined ASUR’s portfolio through the acquisition of Motiva Airports on 1 September. These airports will be incorporated into the group’s monthly traffic reporting beginning with September 2026.

Mexico loses 13.6% of international passengers

ASUR’s Mexican airports handled 3.16 million passengers in August, down 4.0% year-on-year. Domestic traffic performed considerably better, increasing 4.1% to 1.86 million passengers, while international traffic fell 13.6% to just under 1.3 million.

Cancún, by far the largest airport in ASUR’s Mexican portfolio, recorded 2.11 million passengers during the month, 9.3% fewer than in August 2025. International traffic at Cancún declined by 15.0% to 1.19 million passengers, while domestic traffic slipped only 0.6% to around 916,000.

Other Mexican airports developed more positively. Mérida increased its total passenger volume by 6.9%, Oaxaca by 8.4%, Veracruz by 13.1%, Villahermosa by 11.3% and Tapachula by 26.4%.

Colombia remains ASUR’s growth market

Colombia delivered the strongest performance in August. Passenger traffic across ASUR’s Colombian airports rose 4.0% to 1.61 million. Domestic traffic increased 5.8%, while international traffic declined slightly by 1.2%.

Rionegro, serving the Medellín metropolitan area, handled approximately 1.31 million passengers, up 3.3%. Montería recorded particularly strong growth of 27.4%, while traffic at Medellín’s Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport declined by 8.3%.

For the first eight months of the year, ASUR’s Colombian airports handled almost 12 million passengers, an increase of 6.6% compared with the same period in 2025.

Puerto Rico records 5.1% decline

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan handled 1.13 million passengers in August, 5.1% fewer than a year earlier. Domestic traffic declined by 4.9% and international passenger numbers fell 5.9%.

From January through August, San Juan recorded 9.42 million passengers, down 3.4% year-on-year.

Almost 48.5 million passengers since January

Across Mexico, Puerto Rico and Colombia, ASUR handled 48.50 million passengers during the first eight months of 2026, compared with 48.87 million during the same period last year. This corresponds to a decline of 0.8%. Domestic traffic increased by 1.2%, while international traffic decreased by 4.0%.

The group’s geographic footprint has meanwhile expanded substantially. On 1 September, ASUR completed its acquisition of Motiva Airports, adding 17 airports in Brazil and one airport each in Costa Rica, Curaçao and Ecuador. Their traffic will appear in ASUR’s statistics for the first time with the September report.
