Spirit Airlines has told a US bankruptcy court that
sharply rising fuel prices linked to recent geopolitical tensions pushed the
carrier into collapse, forcing it to suspend all flight operations and begin
the liquidation of its fleet.
In a filing submitted to the United States Bankruptcy
Court for the Southern District of New York, Spirit Aviation Holding said the
company had exhausted all available financial and restructuring options before
deciding to permanently halt operations over the weekend.
“The Debtors and their advisors searched for increased
capital and any sources of savings or liquidity, leaving no option unexplored,”
the airline stated in the court documents. “It became clear on Thursday that
sufficient incremental liquidity would not be found.”
Airline seeks approval to liquidate aircraft and
equipment
The South Florida-based carrier is now requesting
court permission to sell its owned aircraft, spare engines and additional
aviation equipment as part of the bankruptcy process.
According to the filing, Spirit also wants
authorization to abandon aircraft and assets that cannot be sold economically.
“In particular, Spirit is hereby requesting
authorization to abandon the aircraft that it owns and are not already subject
to a purchase agreement,” the company said in its motion.
The airline ceased all operations on Saturday
following years of financial instability, unsuccessful restructuring efforts
and growing competitive pressure in the US aviation market.
Fuel costs and failed merger intensified pressure
Spirit pointed to the sharp increase in jet fuel
prices linked to the Iran conflict as a major factor behind the final collapse.
At the same time, competition from major US carriers intensified as legacy
airlines increasingly expanded into low-cost fare models traditionally
associated with ultra-low-cost airlines.
The company also continued to struggle after the
collapse of JetBlue’s planned acquisition of Spirit in 2023. The merger had
been blocked following legal action by the US Department of Justice.
Despite filing for bankruptcy protection twice since
2024, Spirit was unable to restore its former cost advantage or secure
sufficient new financing.
Bailout talks with White House failed
According to the filing, discussions with the White
House regarding a possible 500-million-dollar bailout also failed shortly
before operations were suspended.
US President Donald Trump commented on the situation
on Friday, saying: “If we can help them, we will. But we have to come first.
We're first.”
Pressure on low-cost aviation sector increases
The collapse of Spirit Airlines highlights the growing
vulnerability of low-cost carriers facing volatile fuel markets, inflationary
pressure and intense competition on major domestic routes.
For the broader travel industry, the case also
illustrates how geopolitical crises and energy price fluctuations continue to
affect airline profitability and network stability worldwide.
