Seven properties set to resume operations as the destination accelerates recovery after Hurricane Melissa
RIU to reopen all Jamaica hotels before year-end

RIU Hotels & Resorts has announced plans to reopen all seven of its properties in Jamaica before the end of the year, taking a leading role in reactivating hotel operations across the destination. Jamaica is prioritising the recovery of its key industry as the most effective pathway to overcoming the impact of Hurricane Melissa. The phased reopening coincides with the return of charter flights from major markets including Canada, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, supported by strong commitments from Sunwing and TUI.

Phased reactivation across the island

Operations are being restored step by step. Riu Ocho Rios, located in one of the areas least affected by the storm, remained open throughout and has already reinstated all services. Riu Montego Bay reopened on Sunday, 23 November, while Riu Palace Jamaica resumes operations today, bringing the premium segment back online in this initial phase. The remaining four properties — Riu Reggae, Riu Negril, Riu Palace Tropical Bay and Riu Palace Aquarelle — are scheduled to reopen between 30 November and 15 December 2025.

RIU’s operational and technical teams began repair and clean-up efforts just days after Hurricane Melissa passed, enabling the hotels to be readied in record time. The biggest challenges involved restoring water and electricity supplies, both of which are now functioning in all affected destinations.

Strong commitment to employees and local communities

RIU has placed its employees at the centre of its recovery efforts, in line with its Proudly Committed strategy. The company mobilised a USD 1 million fund, with 80% dedicated directly to staff support. This includes USD 570,000 for materials to help rebuild employees’ homes and USD 230,000 for immediate relief packages with essential goods. An interest-free credit line of USD 1.3 million has also been made available to assist staff in managing storm-related damages.

The remaining 20% of the fund is being channelled into community support. In partnership with the Jamaica Basic School Foundation, RIU has donated USD 200,000 to distribute 1,750 aid packages to isolated communities. Additionally, the chain has joined forces with World Central Kitchen (WCK) to prepare and distribute more than 7,000 hot meals per day from Negril and Montego Bay – an initiative that supports affected residents while also providing temporary employment opportunities for RIU staff during the restoration period.

A key Caribbean destination for RIU

After 24 years in Jamaica, RIU now operates seven hotels across Negril, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Falmouth, offering more than 4,000 rooms and employing 4,000 people. The opening of Riu Palace Aquarelle last year further underscored the company’s deep commitment to the island, positioning Jamaica as one of RIU’s most important destinations in the Caribbean.
