Hapag-Lloyd Cruises’ expedition ship HANSEATIC
inspiration sets sail tomorrow on its sold-out season across the Great Lakes,
one of the world’s most exclusive inland cruise regions. With narrow waterways,
secluded coastal towns, and complex lock systems, the Great Lakes between the
U.S. and Canada are rarely navigated by cruise ships. Interest is soaring: only
a few cabins remain for 2026, leading the line to expand to five voyages in
2027.
Built for exploration
Awarded five stars by Insight Guides and recently
recognized in the “Routes” category at the Kreuzfahrt Guide Awards, HANSEATIC
inspiration is purpose-built for the challenges of the Great Lakes. Retractable
bridge wings and a shallow draught enable the 230-guest boutique ship to
navigate waterways where only a handful of vessels can operate.
Expeditions with all senses
Voyages of 14–17 days feature Zodiac landings in
remote bays and guided hikes with veteran seafarer Thilo Natke, alongside
expert lectures by specialists such as historian Dr Wolfgang Grams. Guests can
explore Windsor’s breweries, Toronto’s Distillery District, Montreal’s art
scene, and Quebec’s French flair. On board, three restaurants, a
Japanese-Peruvian specialty venue, and the 235m² OCEAN SPA provide relaxation
and indulgence.
Lock adventures and new itineraries
From 2027, HANSEATIC inspiration will expand its Great
Lakes program to five cruises. Highlights include navigating the Welland Canal
with eight locks bypassing Niagara Falls, and the Soo Locks, the world’s
largest lock system between Lake Huron and Lake Superior. A passage on Lake
Superior – the deepest and coldest of the lakes – remains a rare expedition
experience.
