Japan’s Prime Minister Reiterates Call for Dialogue with China

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has renewed her call for dialogue with China, stressing the importance of communication amid escalating diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

Openness to Dialogue Despite Strained Relations

Speaking at her first press conference of the new year, Takaichi underlined that dialogue remains essential for managing differences and addressing bilateral challenges. Referring to strained ties following her recent remarks on Taiwan, she emphasized that Japan continues to seek constructive engagement.

“Our nation is open to various opportunities for dialogue with China and has never closed the door,” Takaichi said, according to Kyodo News Agency, as she outlined the government’s priorities for the year ahead.

Chinese Travel Advisory Raises Concerns

Her comments followed a notice issued Saturday by China’s embassy in Japan, which warned that public security conditions in some regions of Japan had recently deteriorated. The embassy advised Chinese citizens to avoid traveling to Japan in the near term. Japanese authorities had not issued an immediate response to the advisory at the time of reporting.

Escalation Since November

Relations between Tokyo and Beijing have been under increased strain since Nov. 7 last year, when Takaichi stated that a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan could legally be classified as a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan. Such a scenario, she argued, could allow Japan to exercise the right of collective self-defense.

The remarks prompted a strong reaction from Beijing. In response, China advised its citizens against travel to Japan and reinstated a ban on seafood imports from the country, among other restrictive measures, further complicating an already fragile relationship.

Despite the tensions, Tokyo continues to signal that diplomatic channels remain open, underscoring dialogue as the preferred path forward.
