Banyan Group has opened Garrya Mu Cang Chai in
Vietnam’s northern highlands, marking the brand’s debut in the country. Located
in Lao Cai Province within a nationally protected heritage area, the resort
sits on 6.5 hectares of terraced mountainside at an altitude of 1,500 metres.
It has been recognised as the World’s Best New Wellness Retreat 2025 and
positions itself as the world’s largest wellness resort built primarily from
bamboo.
Architecture rooted in bamboo and Hmong heritage
The architectural concept draws on Vietnam’s long
tradition of bamboo craftsmanship, with flowing forms that echo the surrounding
rice terraces. Subtle design details inspired by Hmong brocade honour the
indigenous communities that have shaped Mu Cang Chai for generations.
Throughout public spaces and dining areas, bamboo structures create a close
visual and cultural connection between building, landscape and heritage.
A holistic approach to wellbeing
Garrya Mu Cang Chai features 110 rooms, suites and
villas, all oriented towards panoramic views of the Northwestern mountains and
terraced fields. At the heart of the resort is the 8ELEMENTS Spa, which follows
Banyan Group’s eight pillars of wellbeing and combines Asian healing
traditions, local herbal remedies and a 13-step hydrotherapy circuit. Wellness
offerings are complemented by a panoramic gym, guided movement sessions,
singing-bowl experiences and barefoot grounding practices.
Local flavours and seasonal cuisine
Wellbeing extends to the culinary concept. The Refresh
restaurant serves seasonal menus based on ingredients grown using traditional
Hmong farming methods, while the Charcoal Grill focuses on open-fire cooking
inspired by mountain life. A poolside bar offers lighter dishes paired with
wide-ranging views across the highlands.
An authentic highland destination
Located around three hours from Sapa via scenic
mountain roads, the resort offers a quieter alternative to more frequented
destinations in northern Vietnam. Guests can take part in guided treks, craft
workshops and storytelling sessions with local Hmong artisans and elders,
gaining insight into traditions preserved through centuries of relative
isolation. Surrounded by protected heritage terrain and free from mass tourism,
Garrya Mu Cang Chai offers access to both pristine nature and living cultural
heritage.
