Eurowings expands Mallorca operations with winter growth plans

Eurowings is strengthening its long-term commitment to Mallorca by expanding its winter operations and exploring the development of a new aircraft maintenance facility in Palma. The plans form part of a joint initiative with the Government of the Balearic Islands to promote year-round tourism and create additional employment opportunities beyond the peak summer season.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Balearic President Marga Prohens and Eurowings CEO Max Kownatzki in Palma. Both sides aim to distribute visitor demand more evenly throughout the year while supporting sustainable economic growth on the island.

Larger winter presence in Mallorca

Beginning with the 2026/27 winter schedule, Eurowings plans to base six aircraft in Palma de Mallorca during the winter season, doubling its winter fleet compared with two years ago. The expanded operation is intended to support the Balearic Government's strategy of extending the tourism season and increasing business activity during the quieter months.

The airline is also assessing the feasibility of establishing a maintenance facility in Palma. If realised, the project could create highly skilled year-round jobs in aircraft maintenance while strengthening Eurowings' technical capabilities for its growing fleet.

The discussions also included potential cooperation with local universities to support workforce development and innovation.

“Eurowings brings not only visitors to the island but also highly qualified jobs,” said Max Kownatzki, CEO of Eurowings. “The goals of the Balearic Government and Eurowings complement one another. Together, we want to create the conditions necessary to establish Mallorca more firmly as a destination for all four seasons.”

He added: “Especially outside the peak season, Mallorca attracts athletes, nature enthusiasts, and travelers seeking relaxation thanks to its milder temperatures.”

Long-term investment in the island

Eurowings has continuously expanded its presence since opening its Palma base in 2017 and now employs nearly 1,000 people on the island. During the summer season, the Lufthansa Group airline connects Mallorca with 26 airports and operates around 400 weekly flights, primarily to and from Germany and Austria.

The airline has also invested in local infrastructure through the creation of its ground handling company, Wings Handling. Together with the planned expansion of winter operations and potential maintenance activities, these investments reinforce Eurowings' long-term strategy of supporting Mallorca's development as both a year-round tourism destination and an attractive business location.
