Ethiopian Airlines has converted options for six
Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft into firm orders, strengthening its widebody
fleet as part of its international expansion strategy. The agreement was
announced jointly by Boeing and the airline and forms part of commitments made
under Ethiopian Airlines’ landmark aircraft order in 2023.
The airline plans to deploy the new aircraft on
long-haul routes from its hub in Addis Ababa, supporting the continued growth
of intercontinental travel while increasing cargo capacity.
Fleet expansion to support international network
Ethiopian Airlines already operates Africa’s largest
fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The airline currently uses its 787-8 and 787-9
aircraft on intercontinental services connecting Addis Ababa with major
destinations in Europe, Asia and North America, as well as on key routes within
Africa.
Group CEO Mesfin Tasew described the order as an
important step in the airline’s long-term development. “Converting the options
of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airplanes into a firm order is truly a proud
moment for us,” he said. “The order shows Ethiopian Airlines’ sustainable
growth and preparation for further achievements. By growing our fleet size with
ultra-modern airplanes such as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, we are further
maintaining operational excellence and passengers’ comfort.”
Dreamliner central to airline’s fleet strategy
Boeing also highlighted the aircraft’s role in the
airline’s fleet modernization plans. Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s vice president
of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, said the manufacturer is pleased
that Ethiopian Airlines continues to rely on the 787 platform.
“We’re proud that Ethiopian Airlines continues to look
to the 787 Dreamliner to serve as the backbone of their fleet as they grow and
modernize their operations, open new routes and comfortably serve more
passengers,” he said.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is designed to combine
long-range capability with improved fuel efficiency. In addition to passenger
services, the aircraft offers significant belly-cargo capacity, allowing
airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines to support growing trade flows on long-haul
routes while maintaining efficient operations.
