Delta Air Lines is expanding its fleet efficiency
programme by introducing Finlets from Vortex Control Technologies (VCT) across
its entire Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER fleet. Once completed, the modification
will be installed on 240 aircraft, following an extensive evaluation of the
technology's aerodynamic and operational performance.
The decision follows a comprehensive collaboration
between Delta and VCT that included flight testing, engineering assessments and
analysis of operational data. The programme forms part of Delta's long-term
strategy to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions through
practical fleet enhancements.
Aerodynamic technology improves efficiency
Finlets are aerodynamic devices fitted to the rear
fuselage of an aircraft. They optimise airflow, reduce drag and improve
pressure distribution, resulting in lower fuel consumption and reduced
emissions.
“Equipping these Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER fleets
with Finlets represents a significant milestone for VCT. We are proud to
provide a practical technology that helps airlines improve fuel efficiency,
reduce carbon emissions and enhance operating economics,” said Gil Morgan,
Chief Executive Officer of Vortex Control Technologies.
Data-driven approach to fleet upgrades
The introduction of Finlets builds on Delta's
long-standing strategy of improving aircraft performance through targeted fleet
modifications. Before approving the installation, the airline conducted an
extensive validation process that included flight tests, operational trend
analysis and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling of its Boeing 737NG
fleet.
The programme is designed to support lower fuel burn,
improved operating efficiency and reduced environmental impact across one of
the airline's largest narrowbody fleets.
Supporting long-term sustainability goals
Around 90% of Delta's carbon emissions are generated
through jet fuel consumption, making efficiency improvements a key part of the
airline's sustainability strategy. Technologies such as Finlets are intended to
help reduce emissions while delivering long-term operational benefits.
“Delta seeks out partners and innovations that enhance
performance, reduce environmental impact and generate long-term operational
benefits,” said Amelia DeLuca, Delta's Chief Sustainability Officer. “We
appreciate the strong partnership with VCT throughout the evaluation process
and are looking forward to this implementation to further support our ongoing
fleet efficiency initiatives.”
With the fleet-wide rollout, Delta continues to invest
in operational improvements that contribute to its broader environmental
commitments while enhancing aircraft performance.
