Agoda has unveiled a curated guide to destinations
across Asia where human creativity, architectural heritage and living culture
come together in distinctive urban landscapes. The selection spans historic
capitals, trading ports and lakeside cities, reflecting a growing demand for
travel experiences that prioritize immersion over checklists of sights.
Travelers are increasingly drawn to places where
architecture and urban design reveal layers of history and meaning. Strolling
through old quarters, pausing beneath temple roofs or crossing historic squares
at sunset has become part of a deeper engagement with place. Across Asia,
cities continue to demonstrate how built environments can preserve tradition
while embracing contemporary life.
Architecture as a gateway to culture
“More and more travelers are choosing cities not just
for the tallest tower or newest mall, but for the stories etched into their
streets, temples, and town squares,” says Krishna Rathi, Associate Vice
President at Agoda. “According to our 2026 Travel Outlook Report, cultural
exploration is one of the top three motivators for Asian travelers, with
architecture playing a crucial role in that experience. The places that really
resonate are those that protect their heritage while still feeling current – they
are living cities, not museum pieces.”
Against this backdrop, Agoda has identified six
destinations that showcase Asia’s man-made marvels through architecture, urban
form and cultural continuity.
Six destinations where cities tell their stories
·
George Town in Malaysia’s Penang is defined by its UNESCO-listed
historic center, where Chinese shophouses, colonial facades and clan houses
stand alongside contemporary street art. Narrow lanes, ornate temples such as
Khoo Kongsi and long-established kopitiams illustrate centuries of migration,
trade and creativity.
·
In South Korea, Gyeongju offers the atmosphere of a “museum without
walls.” Once the capital of the Silla Kingdom, the city features royal tombs
set within parks, landmark sites like Bulguksa Temple and the Seokguram Grotto,
and Cheomseongdae, one of Asia’s oldest astronomical observatories, all
embedded within a calm urban fabric.
·
Hoi An in central Vietnam preserves the character of a historic trading
port along the Thu Bon River. Merchant houses, assembly halls and the Japanese
Covered Bridge define a compact old town best explored on foot. At dusk,
lanterns illuminate streets and riverbanks, revealing a cinematic portrait of
architectural heritage shaped by cultural exchange.
·
Luang Prabang in Laos combines gilded temples, French-colonial villas
and traditional wooden houses within a setting framed by rivers and mountains.
Daily alms-giving rituals, hilltop viewpoints at Wat Phou Si and working
monasteries reinforce the city’s spiritual rhythm and intimate scale.
·
India’s Udaipur, known as the “City of Lakes,” presents a dramatic
interplay of architecture and landscape. The City Palace complex towers above
Lake Pichola, while island palaces and historic havelis appear to rise from the
water. Intricately carved balconies and courtyards add layers of detail to the
old city’s winding streets.
·
Kanazawa in Japan provides a quieter view of traditional urban culture.
Renowned for Kenroku-en garden, the city also preserves samurai districts such
as Nagamachi and historic teahouse quarters like Higashi Chaya. Museums, craft
workshops and restored wooden buildings reflect a careful balance between
heritage protection and modern cultural life.
Planning cultural journeys across Asia
Agoda’s platform brings together more than six million
accommodation options, over 130,000 flight routes and some 300,000 activities,
all bookable within a single journey. The guide is intended to inspire
travelers to explore cities where architecture and culture form a continuous
narrative—and where every walk through town reveals another chapter of Asia’s
evolving story.
