China will grant visa-free entry to citizens of the
United Kingdom and Canada, expanding its existing visa waiver programme to
include ordinary passport holders from both countries.
Visa waiver effective from mid-February
China’s Foreign Ministry announced that the new policy
will take effect on February 17, 2026. Under the arrangement, eligible
travellers may enter China without a visa and remain in the country for up to
30 days.
The waiver applies to visits for business, tourism,
family or friends visits, exchange programmes and transit purposes. The policy
is scheduled to remain in force until December 31, 2026.
Facilitation of cross-border travel
In its official statement, the Foreign Ministry
described the measure as part of broader efforts to facilitate international
travel and promote cross-border exchanges.
Context of bilateral engagement
The announcement follows recent diplomatic visits.
Last month, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and British Prime Minister Keir
Starmer each travelled to China, where discussions included agreements aimed at
strengthening people-to-people exchanges.
The visa waiver is expected to support travel flows,
business activity and tourism between China and the two countries.
