A total solar eclipse became the centrepiece of three
simultaneous voyages for Atlas Ocean Voyages, with guests aboard World
Traveller, World Navigator and World Voyager gathering on deck to experience
the event from different locations at sea.
The cruise line had spent more than two years planning
the voyages and positioning its three expedition yachts for the eclipse. The
experience combined observation from the open decks with astronomy programmes
and expert explanations in the days leading up to totality.
Three yachts positioned for the eclipse
World Traveller observed the eclipse off the coast of
Palma de Mallorca while sailing towards Ibiza. Farther north, World Navigator
was positioned off Patreksfjörður in Iceland.
World Voyager provided an even more remote setting,
sailing between Scoresby Sund in Greenland and Ísafjörður in Iceland. The three
locations allowed passengers to experience the same astronomical event against
very different Mediterranean and North Atlantic landscapes.
“This was not an experience we created overnight,”
says James A. Rodriguez, President and Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Ocean
Voyages. “The planning began more than two years ago, when we first envisioned
how we could bring our guests to the right place at the right time for this
remarkable event.”
Clear skies arrive at the right moment
Weather remains one of the uncertainties of any
eclipse journey. For one passenger aboard World Navigator, conditions provided
a particularly memorable conclusion to years of unsuccessful attempts.
“We've traveled twice before to experience a total
eclipse, and both times the weather prevented us from seeing it properly,” says
James L., who has travelled with Atlas Ocean Voyages 14 times. “To finally
witness totality from World Navigator, with the skies clearing just in time,
was incredibly special.”
Passengers received appropriate solar viewing
protection, while onboard astronomy programmes explained the science behind the
phenomenon. Eclipse-themed activities were also incorporated into the voyages.
Travel advisor Casey Carr of Carr World Travel
described how an onboard astronomer had prepared passengers for the event. “The
partial eclipse began in the evening, with all of us out on decks taking in the
spectacle and it did not disappoint,” Carr says.
Another eclipse voyage planned for 2027
Atlas Ocean Voyages is already preparing for the next
total solar eclipse. World Traveller is scheduled to depart Barcelona on 27
July 2027 for an eight-night Solar Eclipse Expedition to Lisbon.
The itinerary is again designed around viewing
totality from the open sea. An astronomy expert will accompany the voyage and
provide explanations and live commentary during the eclipse.
Lunar eclipse to feature in 2028 voyage
The company is also incorporating another celestial
event into the inaugural season of Atlas Adventurer, its first Atlas-class
yacht. The vessel is scheduled to operate a 14-night voyage from Bangkok to
Bali beginning on 23 December 2028.
During a stop in Singapore, passengers are expected to
witness a total lunar eclipse shortly after the start of 2029, with totality
beginning 16 minutes after midnight.
For Atlas Ocean Voyages, such events are becoming part
of a broader expedition concept in which itineraries are timed around natural
phenomena as well as destinations. The eclipse voyages demonstrate how
astronomical events can themselves become the reason for travelling rather than
simply an additional experience during a cruise.
