As South Korea prepares for its final long holiday of
the year, digital travel platform Agoda reports a surge in travel planning
ahead of the 10-day Chuseok Golden Holiday. Compared to 2024, searches for
international destinations have risen by 19%, while domestic searches are up
29%, reflecting strong demand for both overseas trips and local getaways.
Japanese cities dominate overseas choices
Based on bookings made between May and August for
check-ins during the Chuseok period, Tokyo emerged as the top international
destination. Fukuoka and Osaka followed closely, while Bali (Indonesia) and Da
Nang (Vietnam) completed the top five. The results highlight South Korean
travelers’ preference for short- and mid-haul destinations that allow quick
escapes without sacrificing family time during the holiday.
Domestic hotspots led by Jeju
On the domestic front, Jeju claimed the top spot,
followed by Busan and Seoul. Secondary destinations Gyeongju and Sokcho round
out the list. Gyeongju has seen the most dramatic rise, with travel searches up
91% year-on-year. Sokcho is also gaining popularity, bolstered by initiatives
such as ‘work-cation’ packages and the new “Sea of Light” media art
installation at Sokcho Beach, offering visitors night-time ocean views enhanced
by immersive light displays.
Travel sentiment and opportunities
“With the Chuseok holiday ahead, South Korean
travelers are eager to make the most of their last long holiday of the year by
traveling with family, friends and loved ones,” said Jay Lee, Country Director,
South Korea at Agoda. “Agoda is committed to offering a wide range of
affordable flights, accommodations, and activity options, helping travelers
create memorable experiences both at home and abroad.”
