Agoda is encouraging travelers to embrace the concept
of slow travel with a curated selection of destinations across Asia. According
to the digital travel platform, these locations allow visitors to immerse
themselves more deeply in local culture, explore at a relaxed pace and build
stronger connections with the places they visit.
The growing interest in slow travel reflects a broader
shift in travel habits. Many travelers are moving away from tightly scheduled
itineraries toward experiences that focus on local cuisine, traditions and
nature. Instead of simply visiting landmarks, the emphasis increasingly lies on
how travelers engage with a destination.
Destinations that encourage a slower pace
Agoda’s selection includes heritage towns, cultural
centers and nature-rich regions across Asia, each offering a distinctive rhythm
and atmosphere.
In Hoi An, Vietnam, the compact old town invites
exploration on foot or by bicycle. Beyond the lantern-lit streets, visitors
often spend time in tailor shops creating custom garments, join cooking classes
that begin with market visits or cycle through rice fields toward nearby
coastal villages. The town’s architecture and cuisine reflect centuries of
Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese trading influences.
Ubud in Bali, Indonesia, combines dramatic landscapes
with a vibrant creative scene. Travelers typically start their day with walks
through terraced rice fields such as Tegallalang before visiting artist studios
and workshops specializing in wood carving or batik. Yoga, meditation and
traditional Balinese healing practices remain central to daily life in the
area.
In Kyoto, Japan, slow travel follows a rhythm shaped
by tradition and the seasons. Visitors explore tea ceremonies, temple gardens
designed for contemplation and seasonal cuisine such as kaiseki dining. Walking
routes through areas like the bamboo groves of Arashiyama encourage a
reflective pace closely connected to nature.
Culture, heritage and nature at the forefront
Within the historic walls of Galle Fort in Sri Lanka,
life unfolds at an unhurried pace. Travelers wander through restored colonial
villas, small galleries and cafés overlooking the Indian Ocean. Nearby beaches
and coastal villages add to the relaxed atmosphere, while local artisans
continue traditions such as lace-making and jewelry crafting.
Luang Prabang in Laos, located between the Mekong and
Nam Khan rivers, is known for its tranquil atmosphere and rich heritage.
Visitors explore ancient temples, take part in traditional almsgiving
ceremonies and enjoy leisurely boat trips. The town’s mix of French colonial architecture
and Laotian culture creates a distinctive setting for slow exploration.
In Chiang Mai, Thailand, travelers combine cultural
experiences with access to northern Thailand’s landscapes. Many visitors plan
their stay around temple visits, meditation retreats and cooking schools
focused on regional Lanna cuisine. Outside the city, national parks, mountain
communities and ethical elephant sanctuaries offer additional opportunities for
exploration.
Further south, Kerala in India is famous for its
peaceful backwaters. Houseboat journeys glide past villages, coconut groves and
rice fields, while travelers on land visit spice plantations, attend Kathakali
dance performances or take part in Ayurveda wellness programs. Local cuisine,
rich in coconut, seafood and spices, plays a central role in the experience.
Growing demand for meaningful travel experiences
Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President of Supply at
Agoda, says travelers are increasingly looking for journeys that feel personal
and connected to place. “Travelers are increasingly looking for trips that feel
personal and grounded in place. Destinations like Galle and Ubud naturally
support this shift, offering the time and space to engage more meaningfully
with local culture whether through food, traditions, or simply slowing down. At
Agoda, we are passionate about helping travelers discover these unique places
and create unforgettable memories. With our extensive range of accommodations
and activities, we make it easy for travelers to plan their perfect slow travel
adventure.”
Agoda currently offers access to more than 300,000
travel activities, over six million accommodation options and more than 130,000
flight routes worldwide, which can all be combined within a single booking.
