Digital travel platform Agoda has identified a range
of birdwatching destinations across Asia where diverse habitats and migratory
routes attract eco-conscious travelers. From Himalayan foothills to tropical
floodplains, these locations provide varied environments for observing both
resident and migratory bird species.
Birdwatching in Asia is closely shaped by geography
and seasonality. Wetlands, river systems and primary rainforests form distinct
ecosystems that influence not only which species appear but also how travelers
encounter them—whether by boat, on foot or from dedicated observation hides.
Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President, Supply at Agoda,
says: “Birdwatching reflects how people want to travel – more time in fewer
places, with a deeper connection to what's around them. What's notable about
these destinations is not just the diversity of species, but the way they
encourage travelers to follow natural rhythms and engage more meaningfully with
local ecosystems. At Agoda, we support these journeys by offering a wide range
of accommodations, flights and activities that make it easier to plan and
experience them.”
Wetlands and migration corridors
Among the highlighted destinations is Keoladeo
National Park in India. The protected wetland area in Rajasthan features a
network of managed waterways and trails that allow close observation of
birdlife, often by bicycle or rickshaw. The park hosts more than 370 species
and becomes especially active during winter migration, when large numbers of
waterfowl arrive.
In Hong Kong SAR, the Mai Po Nature Reserve is one of
Asia’s most important migratory bird habitats. Boardwalks and observation hides
enable visitors to watch species traveling along the East Asian–Australasian
Flyway, including black-faced spoonbills and migratory shorebirds.
Further west, the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in Nepal
lies within the floodplains of the Koshi River. Birdwatching here typically
takes place on foot or by raft, with opportunities to observe grassland species
such as the Bengal florican as well as large seasonal gatherings of waterbirds.
Rainforests and river ecosystems
Tropical rainforest habitats also feature prominently
in Agoda’s selection. Khao Sok National Park in Thailand combines dense jungle
with the open waters of Cheow Lan Lake. Early-morning boat safaris and guided
forest walks offer chances to spot hornbills moving through the canopy and
kingfishers along limestone-lined waterways.
In Sabah, the Kinabatangan River provides a
river-based birdwatching experience. Boat excursions at dawn and dusk
frequently reveal species such as the rhinoceros hornbill and the endemic
Bornean bristlehead alongside other wildlife inhabiting the riverbanks and
oxbow lakes.
Another destination in Sabah, Danum Valley
Conservation Area, is known for its largely untouched primary rainforest.
Guided walks, canopy towers and research trails allow sightings of species such
as the great argus and the Bornean ground cuckoo.
Mountain habitats and biodiversity hotspots
High-altitude environments also offer unique
birdwatching opportunities. The Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary in northeastern
India spans a broad range of elevations within a relatively compact area.
Birdwatchers travel along mountain roads to reach different habitats, where
rare species such as the Bugun liocichla can be observed alongside a wide
variety of Himalayan birds.
Across these destinations, the combination of
landscape diversity and seasonal migration patterns creates conditions that
attract both experienced birdwatchers and nature-focused travelers.
Agoda supports travel planning for such trips through
its digital platform, offering more than six million accommodation options,
over 130,000 flight routes and more than 300,000 travel activities that can be
booked within a single itinerary.
