As the 2026 winter ski season approaches, digital
travel platform Agoda is drawing attention to a selection of ski destinations
across Asia that combine winter sports with strong cultural identities.
Insights from Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report show that outdoor adventure
and activities rank as the fourth most popular reason to travel in 2026 among
Asian travelers, reflecting a broader shift toward experience-driven journeys.
Skiing, once considered a niche pursuit in parts of
Asia, is increasingly appealing to both first-time visitors and experienced
skiers. The region’s resorts offer a mix of varied terrain, reliable winter
conditions and access to local traditions, cuisine and landscapes that extend
the appeal beyond the slopes.
China: Snow Sports and Winter Spectacle in Harbin
Located near Harbin in northeastern China, Yabuli Ski
Resort stands out as the country’s largest ski area, with extensive trails and
modern infrastructure catering to all skill levels. Its proximity to Harbin
adds a cultural dimension to the trip, particularly during winter, when the
city hosts its internationally known Ice Festival, transforming the urban
landscape into a glowing showcase of ice sculptures and light installations.
Japan: Alpine Scenery and Onsen Culture
In the Japanese Alps, Hakuba Valley has long been
associated with deep powder snow and dramatic mountain backdrops. Comprising
more than ten interconnected resorts, the area offers a wide range of slopes
and terrain parks. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, visitors can unwind in
traditional hot springs, or onsens, and experience the village atmosphere that
reflects Japan’s well-known hospitality.
South Korea: Modern Resorts with Local Character
In South Korea, High 1 Ski Resort in Jeongseon
combines contemporary facilities with striking mountain scenery. The resort
features South Korea’s longest ski run and a range of slopes for beginners and
advanced skiers alike. Nearby, the Jeongseon Arirang Market provides insight
into regional culture and cuisine, while the resort’s relative proximity to
Seoul makes it an accessible option for travelers visiting the capital.
India: High-Altitude Adventure in the Himalayas
Set in the Kashmir region, Gulmarg Ski Resort offers a
markedly different experience, defined by panoramic Himalayan views and
challenging terrain. Known for off-piste skiing and deep snow, Gulmarg attracts
adventurous skiers from around the world. The surrounding region adds another
layer to the journey, with historic sites and local traditions shaping a
distinctive winter destination.
Experiences Driving Travel Choices
Jay Lee, Regional Director, North Asia at Agoda,
emphasized the growing role of activities in travel decisions, noting:
“Experiences and activities are among the top motivations for travel, and Asia
offers a diverse array of choices for first-time and expert skiers alike.
Whether you're looking for adventure or relaxation, these destinations provide
unforgettable experiences in unique cultural settings.”
For travelers planning winter ski holidays, Agoda
brings together accommodation, flights and activities within a single booking
platform. With access to millions of properties worldwide, extensive flight
routes and a wide range of activities, the company aims to support flexible
trip planning as interest in winter sports across Asia continues to grow.
