Pope Leo XIV's Planned Visit to Iznik to Boost Pilgrimage and Tourism
Pope Leo XIV has announced plans to visit Iznik, the historic city once known as Nicaea, marking the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea. The visit is expected to transform Iznik into a global hub for pilgrimage and tourism.

Murat Saracoglu, chair of the South Marmara Regional Representation Board of TÜRSAB, emphasized the significance of the visit, predicting that it will draw nearly 2,000 clergy members and media from 50 countries. “This event will elevate Iznik's global profile and attract more religious and cultural tourism,” Saracoglu stated.

Pope Francis had initially planned the visit but passed away before fulfilling it. Pope Leo XIV, continuing his predecessor’s vision, aims to spotlight Iznik as a key Christian pilgrimage site. The visit will also support local tourism development, with infrastructure improvements and new faith-based travel packages being planned.

Authorities are preparing the Basilica of Saint Neophytos, the site of the historic council, to accommodate international visitors. The event is set to make Iznik a prominent destination, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange.
