UN Tourism and FAO Launch Sustainable Gastronomy Tourism Initiative in Pacific Island States
A new joint project by UN Tourism, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at FAO, and the Pacific Tourism Organization (SPTO) aims to connect agrifood systems with tourism in seven Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS), promoting inclusive growth, cultural heritage, and environmental sustainability.
UN Tourism and FAO Launch Sustainable Gastronomy Tourism Initiative in Pacific Island States

The initiative, titled Development of Sustainable Gastronomy Tourism Itineraries and Value Chains in the Pacific SIDS, is being implemented in the Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, and Palau. It focuses on designing immersive tourism experiences—such as farm visits and culinary workshops—that reflect each destination’s ecological and cultural identity.

Agriculture remains central to livelihoods in Pacific SIDS, yet smallholder farmers face numerous challenges, including ageing populations, market access issues, and erosion of traditional practices. Inspired by similar models in remote mountain areas, the project sees gastronomy tourism as a tool to strengthen agrifood value chains and offer new income opportunities for producers.

By transforming farmers into cultural ambassadors and stewards of biodiversity, the initiative reinforces traditional knowledge, supports sustainable farming, and enhances the tourism offer across the region.

A key event will be the Regional Workshop on Sustainable Gastronomy Tourism, scheduled for 30 June – 2 July 2025 in Nadi, Fiji, bringing together producers, tourism operators, and experts to share best practices, develop skills, and explore regional cooperation.

The project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, supporting SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDGs 14 & 15 (Life Below Water and Life on Land). It is supported by Italian Cooperation through the FAO Mountain Partnership.
