Costa Rica's Rainy Season Brings a Surge in Sportfishing Action and Travel Deals
From May through November, offshore waters near Jaco and Los Sueños come alive with prized gamefish such as blue marlin, sailfish, mahi-mahi (dorado), wahoo, and yellowfin tuna. Anglers from around the world are discovering that the "green season" is one of Costa Rica's best-kept secrets.
While the term "rainy season" might deter some travelers, seasoned sportfishermen know it's a golden window. The occasional showers typically roll in during the late afternoons or evenings, leaving the mornings and early afternoons clear and calm—ideal conditions for a full day on the water. Warm water temperatures and nutrient-rich currents during this time help attract big game species, offering consistent action for both inshore and offshore fishing.
"This is one of our favorite times of year," says Bolivar Rodriguez owner of Costa Rica Fishing Experts. "You'll see fewer boats on the water, the bite is hot, and prices are lower across the board."
In addition to the world-class fishing, the rainy season also offers travelers deeply discounted rates on accommodations, tours, and charters. Boutique hotels, beach rentals, and luxury condos across Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast—from Jaco to Herradura to Quepos—are now offering some of their lowest prices of the year.
