The
announcement was praised by Turkish Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri
Ersoy, who described it as “a proud moment” for the country, reflecting
Türkiye’s growing status in global gastronomy.
“Cappadocia,
which brings the rich culinary heritage of Central Anatolia into the present,
has now joined Istanbul, Izmir, and Muğla in the Michelin Guide 2026
selection,” Ersoy said in a social media statement. “This is another step
forward in Türkiye’s journey as a destination for culinary tourism.”
In
a statement from the Culture and Tourism Ministry, Gwendal Poullennec,
international director of the Michelin Guides, highlighted the region’s unique
culinary and cultural appeal.
“Cappadocia
made a strong impression on our inspectors,” he said. “Its food traditions are
intimately tied to its landscape. Local ingredients and traditional farming
methods play a vital role in how chefs here create their dishes. We want to
give travellers one more reason to explore the region—its distinctive and
authentic culinary culture.”
Located
in the heart of Central Türkiye and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site,
Cappadocia is famed for its fairy chimneys, cave dwellings, ancient churches,
and spectacular hot-air balloon rides. It also offers a vibrant food scene,
with dishes such as slow-cooked tandoori meats, clay pot stews, fermented
specialities, and regional mezes.
Michelin’s
first-ever selection of restaurants in Cappadocia will be officially unveiled
during a ceremony on 4 December at the Four Seasons Hotel Bosphorus in
Istanbul. The event will also feature updated selections for Istanbul, Izmir,
and the southwestern coastal province of Muğla.
