The ancient Ionian city of Priene, which has been on
UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List since 2018, has formally begun the
process of seeking permanent inscription.
Historical significance
Priene was one of the 12 ancient Ionian cities and is
closely associated with figures such as the sixth-century philosopher Bias and
the architect Pytheos (Pythius) of the fourth century BC. The city also has
historic links to Alexander the Great, who once set foot in its streets.
Mayor Mustafa Iberya Arikan described Priene as “a
shared cultural heritage for all humanity,” calling it both a historical
responsibility and a unique legacy to be preserved for the future.
Steps toward UNESCO inclusion
According to Mine Asci, Priene’s site manager and an
architect, significant preparatory steps have already been completed. These
include determining site boundaries, establishing a site management office, and
appointing advisory boards.
She noted that permanent inscription would require a minimum
10-year action plan covering both the site and its surroundings. The plan must
include funding strategies, international collaboration, and local awareness
programmes.
Meeting UNESCO’s criteria
Asci underlined that Priene qualifies through its
distinguished Hellenistic architecture, its well-preserved urban layout, and
its association with influential historical figures. Türkiye currently has 22
sites on the permanent UNESCO list and 79 on the Tentative List.
“Inclusion on the permanent list would ensure
scientific preservation, boost international recognition, attract more
visitors, support the local economy, and provide access to global funding and
expertise,” she said.
Stakeholder consultations
To support the nomination process, three days of
consultation meetings are being held in Soke district, where Priene is located.
Stakeholders are invited to provide feedback and recommendations to shape the
city’s long-term preservation and management strategy.
