Bangkok welcomed the opening of CineAsia 2025 on 8
December, marking the fourth time Thailand has hosted Asia’s most influential
cinema exhibition. Held at Icon Cineconic and True Icon Hall, ICONSIAM, the
event highlights Thailand’s expanding importance within the global film
landscape at a moment when the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is advancing
a long-term film-tourism strategy aligned with the country’s ‘New Thailand’
direction.
Hosted by Major Cineplex Group Public Company Limited
in collaboration with Film Expo Group, CineAsia 2025 brings together more than
3,500 participants from 50 countries. Hollywood directors and actors join
international investors and leading Asia-Pacific studios for a programme
featuring technology showcases, equipment demonstrations and expert-led
sessions on distribution and cinema management. The event reinforces Thailand’s
value as a collaborative platform for the creative economy while spotlighting
its cultural diversity and cinematic locations.
Film tourism and the “New Thailand” direction
“Takes place as Thailand advances the ‘New Thailand’
direction, shifting from volume to value and positioning the country as a
premium, high-value destination,” said Mr. Nithee Seeprae, TAT Deputy Governor
for Marketing Communications. He noted that TAT’s global campaign, Unforgettable
Experience: Healing Is the New Luxury, invites travellers to rediscover purpose
and emotional connection. “When filmmakers choose Thailand, they bring our
stories, landscapes and culture into the hearts of millions,” he added.
TAT’s participation at CineAsia underlines its
dedication to developing Thailand as a leading film-tourism destination. The
strategy highlights wellness, sustainability, contemporary culture, safety and
meaningful storytelling — qualities increasingly sought by travellers and
creators aiming for authenticity. This approach contributes to a more balanced
tourism ecosystem and showcases Thailand’s cultural and natural strengths to an
international audience.
A growing global production hub
Thailand’s reputation as a world-class filming
location continues to grow. International productions such as Jurassic World
(shot in Krabi, Trang and Phang-Nga) and The White Lotus Season 3 have
introduced Thailand’s landscapes and hospitality to global viewers, extending a
legacy that includes The Beach, The Hangover Part II, James Bond and Fast &
Furious 9.
Local cinema is rising in prominence as well. Recent
domestic successes, including How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (LAHN
MAH) and A Useful Ghost, highlight the creativity and technical abilities of
Thai filmmakers and production crews. Their achievements reinforce Thailand’s
position not only as a filming destination but also as a source of original
storytelling.
Strengthening infrastructure and policy support
Looking to the future, Mr. Nithee emphasised that
Thailand is investing in production infrastructure, talent development and
supportive regulatory frameworks to enhance its global competitiveness. The
government is considering expanded incentive schemes to draw more international
productions and foster sustained investment. With its diverse locations,
skilled workforce and modern facilities, Thailand continues working toward
creating an environment where creative visions can flourish and resonate worldwide.
