The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has reinforced
its position as a pioneer in sustainable and responsible travel, embedding
environmental and social responsibility into every level of the tourism supply
chain. Guided by its 17 Sustainable Tourism Goals (STGs) and the Sustainable
Tourism Acceleration Rating (STAR), TAT is working with businesses,
communities, and global partners to ensure that tourism in Thailand delivers
long-term value for people, planet, and prosperity.
Sustainability as a pledge, not an option
“Sustainability is not an option but a pledge,” said Ms.
Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor. “Through our Sustainable Tourism Goals and
STAR initiative, we are equipping the industry with clear standards while
empowering communities and entrepreneurs. Our role is to connect these efforts
with the global stage, so travellers see Thailand not just as a beautiful
destination, but as a country where tourism preserves culture, protects nature,
and uplifts people.”
National frameworks driving transformation
Launched in 2023, the STGs—adapted from the UN
Sustainable Development Goals—span governance, socio-economic impact, cultural
heritage, and environmental responsibility. To operationalise them, the STAR
initiative benchmarks tourism operators nationwide, awarding three to five
stars for their sustainability performance. By August 2025, over 2,300
businesses had joined STAR.
Complementary schemes such as the Thailand Tourism
Awards, CF–Hotels, and the Trusted Thailand Stamp raise sector-wide standards,
focusing on safety, accessibility, and carbon reduction.
Innovation in practice: Krabi Prototype and Green
Tourism Collections
Flagship projects bring sustainability to life. The Krabi
Prototype positions the province as Thailand’s pilot “Blue Zone,” integrating
ecological stewardship, cultural preservation, and community wellbeing. In
parallel, the Thailand Green Tourism Collections, launched in July 2025,
feature 20 routes across 10 Green Cities that meet international benchmarks and
appeal to conscious travellers.
Community-based experiences range from the Khlong Thom
Hot Springs in Krabi, recognised by Green Destinations, to weaving villages in
Chiang Mai—showcasing how regenerative tourism enables visitors to contribute
to local livelihoods and environments.
Vision 2026 and global partnerships
Through the New Thailand Vision 2026, TAT is
redefining development toward quality-driven, meaningful growth. Aligned with
the STGs 2030 roadmap, TAT and 20 public and private partners have pledged to
accelerate sustainable practices nationwide.
Internationally, partnerships such as the Meaningful
Thailand programme with non-profit Tourism Cares have already placed 45 Thai
products and services on the global Meaningful Travel Map, boosting visibility
and credibility in priority markets.
“Our partnerships with international networks
strengthen confidence in Thailand as a preferred destination for meaningful
travel,” Ms. Thapanee added. “They demonstrate not only our readiness but also
our determination to inspire the industry to adopt sustainability as a shared
responsibility.”
Thailand as a model for Asia and beyond
By uniting local innovation with global standards, and
embedding sustainability into policy through the STGs and Vision 2026, Thailand
is positioning itself as a regional model for responsible tourism. From
world-class resorts to grassroots communities, the message is clear: every
journey to Thailand should contribute to a better world.
