The Tourism Authority of Thailand took part in the 26th Thai Festival Tokyo, held from 9 to 10 May 2026 at Yoyogi Park, presenting a large-scale showcase centred on Thai pop culture, lifestyle and creative travel experiences.

The festival is considered the largest Thai cultural event held overseas and attracts more than 300,000 visitors annually. This year’s edition was organised under the theme “Creative Life and Creative Heartbeat” and also served as part of preparations for the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Japan in 2027.

The opening ceremony was attended by senior representatives from both countries, including Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Shimada Tomoaki, and Thailand’s ambassador to Japan, Witchu Vejjajiva.

Focus on younger Japanese travellers

According to TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Japan remains one of Thailand’s most important tourism markets.

“Japan remains one of Thailand’s key visitor markets, with strong cultural affinity and long-standing travel ties with Thailand,” she said. “Through Thai Festival Tokyo 2026, TAT is presenting Thailand in a contemporary and accessible way, using Thai pop culture, creativity, and lifestyle experiences to inspire Japanese travellers to discover new dimensions of the country.”

The campaign supports Thailand’s target of welcoming 1.2 million Japanese visitors in 2026 while further strengthening the country’s international cultural profile.

Five themed “Soi” zones

At the centre of the presentation was the “Amazing Thailand: Thai Pop Culture Move” showcase, designed to appeal particularly to younger audiences through music, fashion, Muay Thai, crafts, food and interactive cultural experiences.

Developed together with Thai illustrator Mean Lee, the concept transformed the exhibition area into a stylised Thai street environment inspired by traditional “soi” neighbourhoods.

The showcase featured five themed zones. Visitors could explore travel information and airline activities, take part in Thai weaving workshops, discover T-POP culture and wellness concepts, experience contemporary interpretations of Siam Si fortune sticks, and engage with Muay Thai-inspired fashion and street culture activities.

Throughout the festival, the main stage hosted T-POP performances, music, art presentations and Thai cultural shows inspired by Thailand’s mobile concert truck culture.

Global festival programme continues to expand

In total, the festival featured more than 170 booths representing Thai tourism, food, products, creative industries and cultural initiatives from both the public and private sectors.

According to TAT, Thai Festival events are scheduled to take place in 45 cities across 36 countries worldwide during 2026.
