Thailand’s Songkran Festival 2026 is generating strong
tourism momentum across the country. According to the Tourism Authority of
Thailand (TAT), the nationwide celebrations are expected to produce more than
30.35 billion Baht in tourism revenue during the 11–15 April period,
representing a six percent increase compared with the previous year.
The annual Thai New Year festival continues to attract
both domestic and international travellers. High visitor numbers across major
destinations highlight the event’s growing international profile while
supporting regional tourism economies and community participation throughout
the country.
TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool said: “The strong
performance of Songkran 2026 highlights the global appeal of Thailand’s
cultural charm and reflects strong collaboration across government, private
sector, and communities in elevating the festival to an international level.
Guided by our value-based tourism direction, we continue to showcase Thai
identity through culture, traditions, cuisine, and creativity, while advancing
Thai festivals globally and supporting sustainable, high-value tourism.”
Bangkok celebrations attract large crowds
In the capital, key celebration areas including Silom
Road, Siam Square and Khao San Road recorded consistently high attendance. The
Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2026 at Benjakitti Park welcomed 108,640
visitors between 11 and 13 April, including 56,368 Thai participants and 52,272
international visitors. The event generated an estimated economic impact of
283.68 million Baht.
Another major attraction, the Saneh Art by Songkran
Festival 2026 at Lumphini Park, drew more than 94,546 visitors. Its cultural
and creative programming proved particularly popular with younger audiences and
contributed to high levels of engagement during the celebrations.
Regional destinations highlight cultural traditions
Outside the capital, many provinces combined water
festivities with traditional rituals that reflect the cultural depth of the
Songkran festival. In Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, the well-known “Songkran with
Elephants” celebrations once again attracted large crowds.
Across northern and northeastern Thailand, local
festivals integrated religious and cultural traditions such as water-pouring
ceremonies over Buddha images, colourful parades and Rot Nam Dam Hua rituals,
in which younger generations pay respect to elders. Dedicated water-play
streets also drew large crowds and combined festive energy with community
participation.
Southern Thailand sees strong tourism activity
Tourism activity also expanded in southern provinces,
particularly in Songkhla. The Sadao border crossing recorded more than 36,000
entries between 10 and 12 April, largely driven by Malaysian visitors. Hotels
in the area reported average occupancy levels of around 80 percent.
Total arrivals in Songkhla are projected to reach
approximately 70,000 visitors, generating around 700 million Baht in tourism
revenue. Border towns in Thailand’s Deep South, including Betong in Yala and
Su-ngai Kolok in Narathiwat, extended celebrations into evening events such as
“Suk Sanuk Songkran Chaaidaen Tai” and SUNGAIKOLOK Midnight Songkran 2026,
strengthening their role as emerging cultural and nightlife destinations.
Domestic and international tourism continue to grow
During the 11–15 April festival period, international
arrivals are projected to reach approximately 500,000 visitors, a four percent
increase year-on-year. These visitors are expected to generate around 8.1
billion Baht in tourism revenue.
Domestic travel remains the main driver of the
festival economy. Around 5.96 million domestic trips are projected during the
same period, an increase of seven percent compared with last year and
generating approximately 22.25 billion Baht in revenue.
Combined, domestic and international tourism related
to Songkran 2026 is expected to exceed 30.35 billion Baht, representing a six
percent increase year-on-year.
Festival continues beyond the official dates
While the nationwide peak of Songkran celebrations
concludes on 15 April, several destinations across Thailand will continue
festivities beyond the official holiday period.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand emphasises that the
festival remains a key pillar of the country’s tourism economy, supporting
regional distribution of travel demand while strengthening Thailand’s
international reputation as a destination for cultural experiences.
