Bangkok has been named the world’s most visited city
by international travellers in 2025, according to the latest Top 100 City
Destinations Index published by Euromonitor International. The ranking places
the Thai capital at number one globally, with 30.3 million international
arrivals – the highest figure recorded among all cities assessed this year.
Recognition of a resilient tourism ecosystem
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has welcomed
the findings, viewing the result as confirmation of Bangkok’s sustained
international appeal. “Bangkok’s position as the world’s most visited city
reflects the enduring strength of Thailand’s tourism ecosystem and the city’s
ability to deliver meaningful, high-quality visitor experiences,” said Ms
Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of TAT. She noted that the ranking supports
Thailand’s strategic focus on value-driven tourism, longer stays and
responsible travel, while ensuring Bangkok continues to evolve as a safe,
vibrant and globally competitive destination.
Comprehensive global assessment
Euromonitor International’s index evaluates 100 cities
worldwide based on more than 50 indicators. These span tourism performance,
policy and destination appeal, infrastructure, health and safety,
sustainability, as well as economic and business activity. In this context,
Bangkok outperformed other major global cities, maintaining its leading
position despite ongoing economic uncertainty and intensifying competition
between destinations.
Value over volume in urban tourism
In its analysis, Euromonitor highlights a broader
shift among leading urban destinations towards prioritising value rather than
sheer visitor volume. Sustainable growth, long-term resilience and destination
quality are increasingly central to city tourism strategies. Bangkok’s
continued success is attributed to strong destination fundamentals and
consistent international demand, aligning with these evolving priorities.
A city of contrasts and connectivity
Bangkok’s global appeal lies in its distinctive blend
of tradition and modernity. Historic temples and riverside neighbourhoods
coexist with creative districts, contemporary architecture and world-class
shopping. The city is internationally renowned for its street food culture and
Michelin-recognised dining scene, supported by extensive air connectivity and a
high level of service readiness. These strengths have earned Bangkok repeated
recognition from leading international travel and lifestyle publications.
As Thailand’s primary gateway, the capital plays a
pivotal role in driving nationwide tourism flows and supporting balanced growth
across the country. Its leading position in the Euromonitor ranking reinforces
Thailand’s standing on the global tourism stage and aligns with TAT’s
international communication campaign, “Unforgettable Experience: Healing is the
New Luxury.”
Global outlook
According to the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2025,
the world’s leading cities are projected to welcome a combined 702 million
international trips this year, accounting for 46 percent of global inbound
tourism. Within this global landscape, Bangkok’s number-one ranking underscores
its continued relevance as one of the world’s most influential and attractive
urban destinations for international travel.
