Tokyo has become the Asian destination most frequently
revisited by travellers booking through Agoda. The Japanese capital takes first
place in the digital travel platform’s 2026 Repeat Visitor Ranking, replacing
Bangkok at the top.
The analysis is based on bookings made during the
first half of 2026. Bangkok ranks second, followed by Bali, Seoul and Osaka. Da
Nang takes sixth place, ahead of Kuala Lumpur, Fukuoka, Taipei and Johor Bahru.
Japan places three destinations in the top ten
Japan performs particularly strongly in this year’s
ranking. In addition to Tokyo taking first place and Osaka ranking fifth,
Fukuoka enters the top ten for the first time in eighth position.
Agoda attributes Tokyo’s high level of repeat business
to the variety the city offers across different visits, ranging from seasonal
experiences and neighbourhoods to its extensive restaurant scene. Fukuoka,
meanwhile, indicates growing interest in Japanese destinations beyond the
country’s best-established international tourism centres.
For travel sellers, repeat visits can be particularly
significant in markets such as Japan. Customers already familiar with the
country may be more inclined to explore secondary cities or combine established
destinations with less familiar regions on subsequent trips.
Da Nang gains ground
Vietnam also strengthens its position in the ranking.
Da Nang has climbed two places to sixth, making it the highest-ranked
Vietnamese destination.
Its combination of beaches, value for money and
proximity to attractions including Hoi An gives the coastal city a broad
holiday profile. The result also suggests potential for repeat visitors to
Vietnam who want to combine leisure stays with cultural experiences.
Bali achieves another notable change, reaching third
place for the first time. The Indonesian island now sits behind only Tokyo and
Bangkok in Agoda’s ranking.
Familiar destinations generate new trips
The results highlight a characteristic of Asian
tourism that can also be relevant to long-haul sales: a first visit does not
necessarily exhaust demand for a destination. Seasonal differences, food,
neighbourhoods and nearby destinations can provide reasons for customers to
return.
“Asia is home to so many destinations that are worth
revisiting, and what we're seeing is that travelers are building relationships
with their favorite cities,” said Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President, Supply
at Agoda.
He points particularly to the advances made by Tokyo,
Fukuoka and Da Nang as evidence that travellers continue to find new reasons to
return to destinations they already know.
For the travel trade, the ranking therefore provides
more than a measure of destination popularity. Repeat demand can create
opportunities for more differentiated products aimed at experienced Asia
travellers, particularly in Japan and Vietnam, where Agoda’s latest figures
show movement beyond some of the traditionally strongest destinations.
