Lufthansa has introduced the first Airbus A380 with
its newly designed Business Class, marking a key milestone in the airline’s
ongoing fleet modernisation. The upgraded aircraft, registered D-AIMC
“Mike-Charly”, completed its inaugural commercial flight with the new cabin
from Munich to Los Angeles on April 23.
The retrofit is part of a broader programme to enhance
the passenger experience across all eight A380 aircraft in Lufthansa’s fleet.
In addition to a redesigned Business Class, the upgrade includes improvements
to the in-flight entertainment system and general cabin features across all
classes.
More comfort and privacy in Business Class
The new Business Class on the A380’s upper deck
introduces a significantly upgraded seat concept developed by Thompson. Each of
the 68 seats offers direct aisle access, a width of 58 centimetres and a bed
length of at least two metres. Adjustable partitions provide added privacy,
positioning the product at a higher premium level than before.
Lufthansa aims to combine spaciousness with a more
individualised travel experience, particularly on long-haul routes where
comfort and personal space are key decision factors for premium travellers.
Enhanced digital experience on board
Alongside the seating upgrade, Lufthansa has
modernised its in-flight entertainment system. Passengers now have access to an
expanded selection of films, series, music, digital publications and
interactive features via 18-inch Panasonic screens. Bluetooth connectivity
allows the use of personal headphones.
Additional features include a redesigned user
interface, a 3D moving map, live camera views and improved audio quality,
bringing the digital onboard experience in line with current passenger
expectations.
Fleet upgrade progressing on schedule
The retrofit of the first aircraft was completed in
just under twelve weeks at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, where the programme
began in early February. Work on the next aircraft, D-AIMH “Mike-Hotel”, has
already started, ensuring continuous progress in the upgrade cycle.
In parallel with the cabin refurbishment, each
aircraft also undergoes routine maintenance work. Lufthansa plans to complete
the modernisation of all eight A380 aircraft by mid-2027.
With the introduction of the upgraded A380, the
airline is reinforcing its focus on premium long-haul travel, combining
capacity, comfort and updated onboard technology in its largest aircraft.
