Türkiye generated a record $51.28 billion in tourism revenue during the first nine months of 2026, an increase of 2.4 percent compared with the same period last year. Announcing the results at a press conference in Istanbul on October 30, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy highlighted the sector's continued growth despite geopolitical tensions, higher aviation costs and uncertainty in international travel markets.
The country welcomed 49.13 million visitors between January and September, including 23.37 million during the third quarter. Russia remained Türkiye's largest source market with 5.7 million visitors, followed by Germany with 5.17 million and the United Kingdom with 3.2 million. The figures underline the continuing importance of European markets alongside demand from Russia.
Revenue growth was particularly strong during the summer quarter. Between July and September, tourism earnings increased by 5 percent year-on-year to $25.53 billion. According to Ersoy, both the third-quarter result and the cumulative revenue for the first nine months represent the highest levels recorded in the country's history. The government now intends to build on this performance by diversifying source markets, extending tourism activity throughout the year and strengthening international air connectivity.
Higher Visitor Spending Supports Revenue Growth
An important factor behind the increase in tourism revenue was higher average spending per night.
Across all visitor categories, daily spending rose by 4.6 percent compared with the previous year, reaching $107.70 during the January–September period. Foreign tourists spent an average of $119.90 per night, while Turkish citizens living abroad spent $72.20.
The average length of stay was 10.34 nights during the first nine months and 10.69 nights in the third quarter.
These figures indicate that increased expenditure per night contributed to the sector's revenue performance. For hotels, tourism businesses and destination management organisations, visitor spending is an important indicator alongside arrival numbers, particularly as destinations seek to increase the economic value of tourism.
Ersoy acknowledged that the industry had faced difficult external conditions throughout 2026. Regional conflicts, airspace restrictions and rising energy prices have increased airline operating costs and affected international travel demand.
The minister emphasised the importance of responding flexibly to changing market conditions. Türkiye's tourism strategy allows promotional resources to be redirected when demand weakens in individual source markets, he explained.
International Marketing Reaches Billions of Viewers
Türkiye continues to invest heavily in international destination marketing through the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency.
According to figures presented by Ersoy, the agency's digital campaigns generated 7.1 billion impressions across 74 countries. In addition, ten promotional miniseries featuring destinations including Cappadocia, Bodrum, Izmir, Ankara and the Black Sea region accumulated 10.5 billion views worldwide during 2025 and 2026.
The campaigns form part of a wider effort to promote Türkiye beyond its established coastal holiday destinations.
The government aims to distribute tourism demand more evenly across the country's 81 provinces and reduce the concentration of visitor activity in the main summer season.
Cultural tourism plays an important role in this approach. Initiatives such as the Heritage for the Future archaeological programme and the expansion of nighttime museum access are intended to make historical attractions more accessible and encourage visits outside conventional sightseeing hours.
These measures also support the development of alternative travel products, including cultural itineraries, archaeological tourism and regional tours that can be combined with traditional beach holidays.
New Source Markets and Air Connectivity in Focus
Looking ahead, Türkiye plans to intensify promotional activities in markets considered to have substantial growth potential.
The United States and Canada are among the priorities, alongside countries in Asia, Africa and Australia. The objective is to broaden the country's international visitor base and reduce its dependence on a relatively small number of established source markets.
Air connectivity will be central to this strategy. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism intends to work with Turkish Airlines and tour operators to expand direct flight capacity and improve access from emerging markets.
For international travel companies, additional air services could create opportunities to develop new itineraries and reach customer groups that currently face more limited flight options.
The ministry also plans to make greater use of data analysis and artificial intelligence to monitor travel demand, understand visitor preferences and evaluate marketing campaigns.
These tools are expected to support more targeted promotional activities and allow the tourism authorities to respond more quickly to changes in individual markets.
With $51.28 billion in tourism revenue already generated by the end of September, Türkiye enters the final quarter of 2026 having achieved its strongest nine-month financial performance to date.
The combination of higher visitor spending, established demand from major European markets and efforts to attract travellers from additional regions will remain central to the country's tourism development strategy.
