Tourexpi
The
chain invested a total of 3,918,084 euros, a 39.4% increase
compared to the previous year, which was allocated to 99 projects carried
out in collaboration with 82 strategic allies.
Children’s
causes continue to be the main focus of RIU’s philanthropy and account for 83%
of its social investment, with health, social development and education
projects. These projects directly benefited 39,226 children and teenagers, and
indirectly helped 98,321 people.
The
chain has also made great progress in terms of environmental responsibility.
These actions, such as the use of electricity from renewable sources in 70% of
hotels and photovoltaic energy for self-supply in 20% of establishments, have
reduced the carbon footprint per stay by 56% over the past two years. In
addition, the ratio of single-use plastic per stay has been reduced by 10%.
Over the last year, the chain increased the amount invested in ecosystem and
species protection projects by almost 30%.
With
a workforce of over 35,000 employees, 66% of whom are permanent, RIU goes to
great efforts to ensure its staff receive adequate training. Over the course of
2023, the total amount of training provided increased by 49% compared to 2022
and reached 189,000 hours, equivalent to an average of 5.4 hours per
employee.
RIU
also upheld its commitment to compliance and transparency by undergoing
sustainability certification processes. A total of 89 hotels were certified in
2023, one of the highest figures in this industry in Spain.
In
2023, the chain translated its ambitious commitment to sustainability into a
four-year strategy. This intensive process of reflection resulted in the
presentation of the new Proudly
Committed strategy to all employees in November. This strategy marks a
turning point for RIU and puts sustainability at the heart of all the
organisation's decisions to ensure that the impact of its activity is always as
positive as possible for societies and ecosystems alike.
