Germany's inbound tourism industry recorded positive results during the main summer travel season of 2026, despite continuing economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions. Preliminary figures from the Federal Statistical Office show that international visitor overnight stays increased in June and July compared with the previous year, while August recorded 9.9 million overnight stays. The German National Tourist Board (GNTB) sees the development as evidence of sustained international demand for Germany as a travel destination.
The strongest year-on-year growth during the summer months was recorded in July, when overnight stays by international visitors increased by 3.2 percent. June had already registered a rise of 1.3 percent. In August, the number of overnight stays was approximately 1.3 percent higher than in the preceding month, according to the preliminary figures. This represents a month-on-month comparison rather than a year-on-year increase.
Across the first eight months of 2026, Germany recorded a total of 57 million overnight stays by international guests, an increase of 1.0 percent compared with the same period in 2025. The figures suggest that the destination maintained its appeal during a period marked by economic instability and international conflicts. For the German tourism industry, the results provide a positive starting point for the autumn and winter travel seasons.
Germany Outperforms Global Tourism Growth
The development is particularly notable when compared with international tourism figures.
According to UN Tourism, international tourist arrivals worldwide increased by 0.4 percent during the first six months of 2026. Over the same period, Germany recorded a 1.8 percent increase in international visitor overnight stays, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
Although the two indicators measure different aspects of tourism activity and are therefore not directly equivalent, the figures indicate that Germany experienced stronger growth in its reported inbound tourism measure than the global increase in international arrivals.
Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the GNTB, considers the summer results an indication of Germany's competitiveness in international travel markets.
"The positive development in the main travel season underlines the high attractiveness and competitiveness of the travel destination Germany," she said.
The GNTB also points to findings from an international survey conducted during the summer of 2026. Commissioned by the tourism board across 19 countries, the research examined how potential travellers perceive Germany.
Respondents associated the destination with qualities including educational value, excitement, fascination, relaxation and romance. According to the GNTB, these perceptions support Germany's positioning as a destination offering a broad range of cultural, urban and leisure experiences.
Positive Outlook for Autumn and Winter
The summer figures are particularly relevant for Germany's tourism industry because they reflect demand during a period of uncertainty in international travel markets.
Geopolitical conflicts and economic instability continue to influence travel decisions, while destinations compete for international visitors across different source markets. Against this background, the increase in overnight stays indicates that Germany has maintained a stable position in international tourism.
The GNTB believes the results create opportunities for further growth during the remaining months of 2026.
For tourism businesses, the autumn and winter seasons provide opportunities to attract international visitors beyond the traditional summer holiday period. Germany's cultural attractions, city destinations and seasonal travel experiences can support demand throughout the year.
However, the preliminary figures do not yet establish how individual source markets or tourism segments performed during the summer. More detailed statistics will be needed to assess which visitor groups contributed most to the increase and whether the positive trend continued into September and October.
The cumulative growth of 1.0 percent through August also indicates a moderate overall expansion rather than a substantial surge in international tourism.
Nevertheless, the results confirm that Germany's inbound tourism industry continued to grow during the first eight months of 2026. With international overnight stays reaching 57 million and positive developments during the peak summer season, the destination enters the final months of the year with a stronger demand base than in the corresponding period of 2025.
