Formula 1 is returning to Istanbul. The Turkish Grand
Prix will rejoin the FIA Formula 1 World Championship in 2027, with Istanbul
Park scheduled to host races for five consecutive seasons through 2031.
Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri
Ersoy confirmed the agreement following a meeting with Youth and Sports
Minister Osman Aşkın Bak at the Atatürk Cultural Center in Istanbul. Officials
discussed preparations for the event, coordination between the institutions
involved and plans to promote the race internationally.
Five-year agreement for Istanbul Park
Under the agreement with Formula 1 management,
Istanbul Park will stage the Turkish Grand Prix every year from 2027 through
the end of the 2031 season.
Ersoy said preparations were already under way to
combine Turkey’s experience in hosting major international events with the
global appeal of Formula 1.
The meeting brought together representatives of the
Culture and Tourism Ministry, the Youth and Sports Ministry, the Turkish
Tourism Promotion and Development Agency and the Turkish Automobile Sports
Federation, TOSFED. Organisational responsibilities, infrastructure
requirements and national and international promotional activities were among
the issues discussed.
A circuit with a distinctive Formula 1 history
The return marks another chapter in Istanbul Park’s
Formula 1 history. Turkey first hosted the championship from 2005 to 2011
before the circuit returned to the calendar for races in 2020 and 2021.
Istanbul Park became particularly well known among
drivers and motorsport fans for its challenging layout, including the
high-speed, multi-apex Turn 8.
After an absence of several years, the 2027 comeback
will once again place Istanbul on the international motorsport calendar and
give Turkey a major sporting event with substantial potential to attract
overseas visitors.
Tourism and international visibility
For the Turkish government, the Grand Prix is also
part of a wider strategy to strengthen the country’s position as a host of
major international events.
The five-year commitment gives Istanbul more than a
single high-profile race weekend. With Formula 1 secured through 2031, tourism
authorities and event organisers can build longer-term international promotion
around the Turkish Grand Prix while the city once again becomes a regular stop
on the Formula 1 calendar.
