United Airlines expands meal preordering to shorter flights

United Airlines has expanded its meal preordering programme to shorter flights, allowing up to 65,000 additional passengers per day to select fresh food before departure. The change applies to United Economy services across North America and the Caribbean and forms part of the carrier’s broader investment in onboard products and digital services.

Previously available on flights exceeding 1,190 miles, the fresh food preordering option now covers journeys of more than 900 miles. This brings approximately 420 additional daily flights into the programme, including connections between Chicago and Houston, Denver and San Francisco, and Houston and Washington, D.C.

The expansion is designed to give passengers greater control over their onboard experience while helping the airline organise catering requirements more efficiently. Travellers can choose their meals through United’s website or mobile application before arriving at the airport. The service is particularly relevant to domestic and regional routes where passengers increasingly expect food options beyond conventional packaged snacks.

Fresh meals available before departure

United’s Bistro on Board selection includes sandwiches, burgers, pasta dishes and breakfast options, with menus changing monthly. Current offerings include a pork mojo burrito, a Chicago-style patty melt developed with chef Jeff Mauro, a hot honey chicken and waffle sandwich, and a cinnamon apple waffle.

Passengers can also preorder eligible snack boxes and other retail food items. Orders can be placed from five days until 24 hours before departure through the airline’s digital booking channels.

Customers using the United app receive a notification when preordering becomes available for their flight. The airline expects the expanded service to provide more predictable meal availability and simplify the purchasing process.

“We want our customers to have more of what they value when they fly – more choice, more convenience and a better experience onboard,” said David Kinzelman, United’s Chief Customer Officer.

He described the programme as part of a wider effort to improve the passenger experience through additional services, connectivity and entertainment.

Connectivity and entertainment investments continue

Alongside its catering improvements, United is expanding its onboard technology across both regional and mainline aircraft.

The airline has introduced free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members on equipped aircraft, enabling passengers to stream content, browse the internet and remain connected during their journeys. According to United, the service is already available across its entire two-cabin regional fleet and on more than 280 mainline aircraft. Fleetwide installation is scheduled for completion in 2027.

United is also extending its live television and entertainment offering. More than 200 aircraft currently provide access to live programming through Starlink-enabled seatback screens, including major American television networks and sports channels.

The carrier offers more than 2,500 hours of onboard entertainment, incorporating programming from Apple TV, HBO Max, A24 and Spotify. Its continuing cabin modernisation programme includes the installation of seatback screens on up to 1,000 aircraft by the end of 2027.

New aircraft will also feature 27-inch 4K OLED seatback displays, which United describes as the largest offered by a US airline.

Food and beverage services remain another area of development. From 1 November 2026, United plans to introduce updated versions of its Tapas, Takeoff and Recline snack boxes, alongside seasonal menu additions.

The latest changes reflect an increasingly integrated approach to the passenger experience, combining digital predeparture services with improvements to catering, connectivity and entertainment. For travellers on medium-distance routes, the expanded meal preordering programme represents an additional option previously reserved for longer journeys.
