Syrian Airlines is expanding its European network with two new direct connections from Damascus. The national carrier plans to launch regular services to Vienna and Copenhagen on 21 September 2026, according to Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport.

The announcement marks another step in the gradual restoration of international air connectivity to Syria. The country’s aviation authorities are pursuing a two-track strategy: expanding the route network of Syrian Airlines while simultaneously encouraging foreign carriers to return to Syrian airports.

Vienna and Copenhagen join the network

Omar al-Hosari, head of Syria’s General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, said the new routes form part of efforts to strengthen Syrian Airlines’ regional and international presence and improve connections between Syria and Europe.

Both routes are due to begin on the same day, 21 September. The authority has not yet provided details on flight frequencies or schedules.

Hosari said further international destinations for Syrian Airlines are expected to be announced in the coming period.

Syria seeks return of foreign airlines

Alongside the expansion of the national carrier, Syrian aviation authorities are working to attract more Arab and international airlines to the country.

Hosari said new foreign carriers are expected to enter the Syrian market, accompanied by additional routes to and from the country. The strategy could gradually restore connections that disappeared during years of conflict and international isolation.

For the tourism and travel industry, improved European connectivity would also make journeys to Syria easier for travellers visiting friends and relatives as well as other passenger segments that have so far depended heavily on connecting flights through regional hubs.

Direct flights from Germany resumed in August

The announcement follows the restoration of a direct air connection between Germany and Syria earlier this month after an interruption of around 14 years.

On 11 August, a flight operated by German leisure carrier Sundair arrived at Damascus International Airport from Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The service marked the return of a direct air link between the German and Syrian capitals.

With Vienna and Copenhagen now scheduled to follow in September, Syria is continuing to rebuild its direct aviation links with European markets.
