The Caribbean tourism market is moving towards
increasingly integrated holiday products, with cruise lines, resorts and
destination experiences becoming part of broader distribution platforms. One of
the clearest examples is Royal Caribbean Group’s planned investment of
approximately US$3 billion for a 50% stake in Sandals and Beaches Resorts.
The transaction would bring together Royal Caribbean’s
global cruise business with Sandals’ extensive all-inclusive resort portfolio
across the Caribbean. Beyond the financial investment, the companies intend to
explore opportunities for wider distribution, stronger guest relationships and
easier access to experiences across their respective portfolios.
Cruises and resorts move closer together
Royal Caribbean Group already operates across several
segments of the international cruise market through Royal Caribbean, Celebrity
Cruises and Silversea and holds a 50% stake in TUI Cruises. The group is also
developing private destinations and plans to enter the river cruise market in
2027.
Sandals, meanwhile, brings an established network of
all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica, Antigua, Saint Lucia, the Bahamas, Barbados,
Grenada, Curaçao and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Beaches operates
properties in Jamaica and Turks and Caicos, with further Caribbean openings
planned.
The combination therefore reaches beyond a
conventional hotel investment. Cruise holidays, private destinations, resorts,
entertainment and other experiences could increasingly be marketed within a
connected holiday proposition.
Distribution is central to the strategy
The planned partnership also illustrates how major
tourism groups are seeking growth beyond their traditional core products. Royal
Caribbean gains exposure to the Caribbean all-inclusive resort sector, while
Sandals could benefit from access to a wider international distribution and
customer network.
According to the announcement, the partners intend to
explore opportunities to expand distribution and improve access to experiences
across both portfolios. Existing reservations, loyalty programmes and current
operations are expected to continue as normal during the integration process.
The transaction is expected to close in early 2027,
subject to the required approvals and other conditions. Royal Caribbean Group
plans to finance the approximately US$3 billion investment through committed
debt financing.
Caribbean tourism continues to grow
The deal comes against a backdrop of continued growth
in Caribbean tourism. According to figures cited from the Caribbean Tourism
Organization, the region received approximately 35 million international
tourists in 2025, an increase of 2.5% over 2024 and 9.6% above 2019 levels. For
2026, the organisation expects international arrivals to grow by around 3.9%.
Growth is increasingly accompanied by efforts to
generate more value from individual visitors rather than focusing solely on
arrival numbers. Resorts, cruises, excursions, restaurants and other local
tourism services are consequently becoming more closely connected within the
destination experience.
Caribbean holiday distribution enters a new phase
For the international travel trade, the Royal
Caribbean-Sandals transaction is particularly significant because it brings two
traditionally distinct holiday segments closer together. Cruise groups are
expanding into land-based experiences and private destinations, while resort
operators are looking for broader distribution and access to international
customers.
The deal does not immediately change existing
operations and still requires approval. If completed, however, it would create
a major platform combining cruise products and an extensive all-inclusive
resort portfolio across some of the Caribbean’s most important leisure
destinations.
