Lufthansa Group announces largest route expansion since 2020

Lufthansa Group has unveiled its summer 2027 flight programme, announcing its most extensive network expansion since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The schedule introduces ten new intercontinental connections alongside additional European destinations and increased frequencies on established routes. The expanded programme became available for booking on 20 October 2026 and involves Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Discover Airlines and Edelweiss.

The Americas are a major focus of the expansion. New nonstop services will connect Frankfurt with Columbus, Ohio, and Edmonton, Canada, while Munich gains a direct route to Phoenix, Arizona. In South America, ITA Airways will introduce flights between Rome and Caracas, Venezuela. Additional frequencies to Brazil and the Dominican Republic will further strengthen the group's transatlantic network, offering more travel options for both leisure and business passengers.

Asia also features prominently in the new schedule, with Lufthansa adding Tokyo-Narita and Nagoya from Frankfurt and SWISS maintaining its recently introduced Bengaluru service. Across the group, the expansion combines new destinations with greater capacity on routes where demand is already established. The programme reflects a broader strategy of strengthening connectivity through the group's European hubs while expanding access to international tourism and business markets.

New routes strengthen connections to the Americas

Lufthansa will launch nonstop flights between Frankfurt and Columbus on 5 May 2027. The Ohio state capital will be served three times weekly, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, using Boeing 787-9 aircraft equipped with the airline's Allegris cabin configuration.

According to Lufthansa, it will be the only European airline operating a nonstop connection to Columbus, providing direct access to a region with substantial business travel demand.

A second new US destination will follow on 3 August, when Lufthansa introduces flights between Munich and Phoenix. The Arizona capital will receive three weekly services on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, operated with Airbus A350-900 aircraft.

Discover Airlines is also expanding its North American network. From 1 June 2027, the leisure carrier will connect Frankfurt with Edmonton three times weekly, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The route will make Edmonton its third Canadian destination alongside Calgary and Halifax.

For South American connectivity, one of the most significant developments is ITA Airways' new Rome–Caracas service. Beginning on 30 March 2027, the Italian carrier plans three weekly flights to the Venezuelan capital, operating on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays with Airbus A330-900 aircraft.

The connection will create an additional nonstop link between Europe and Venezuela, providing new opportunities for international travel and connections through Rome Fiumicino.

Lufthansa will also increase frequencies from Frankfurt to Rio de Janeiro and from Munich to São Paulo. These additions strengthen the group's capacity to Brazil, one of South America's largest international aviation markets.

In the Caribbean, Edelweiss plans to increase its Zurich–Punta Cana service to as many as four weekly flights, adding capacity to one of the Dominican Republic's principal leisure destinations.

Japan and India gain additional capacity

The Asia-Pacific network will see several important changes, particularly in Japan.

From 28 March 2027, Lufthansa will introduce a daily Frankfurt–Tokyo-Narita service, complementing its existing daily flights from Frankfurt and Munich to Tokyo-Haneda. The new Narita connection will use Boeing 787-9 aircraft featuring the Allegris cabin.

The airline will also resume its seasonal Frankfurt–Nagoya route on 29 March, operating three times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

SWISS is increasing its Tokyo-Narita offering as well. The airline will operate daily flights at the beginning of the summer season until the end of May and again in October. Between June and September, frequencies will rise from five to six weekly departures compared with the previous summer.

India remains another important growth market. Lufthansa will introduce a second seasonal daily service between Munich and Delhi from 28 March and increase frequencies to Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.

SWISS will retain its recently introduced Bengaluru connection in the summer programme, offering five weekly flights from Zurich.

Elsewhere in Asia, Lufthansa's Frankfurt–Kuala Lumpur route, scheduled to launch in October 2026, will continue through summer 2027 with daily departures. Additional capacity is also planned between Munich and Singapore.

Austrian Airlines will operate daily flights to Tokyo-Narita from May through October and serve Shanghai five times weekly. Bangkok will remain a daily destination throughout the summer season.

Africa and the Indian Ocean remain important leisure markets

Several Lufthansa Group airlines are expanding their services to African destinations and the Indian Ocean.

Brussels Airlines will introduce Cairo as a new destination, operating five weekly flights from Brussels. The airline will also increase its Kilimanjaro service to three weekly frequencies following the route's introduction in summer 2026.

Discover Airlines is strengthening its long-haul operations in Munich by stationing a third Airbus A330-300 at the airport. This will support additional services to Windhoek, increasing the airline's Munich–Namibia offering to five weekly flights.

Edelweiss will begin its seasonal Windhoek programme on 16 March and increase frequencies to three weekly services from July. Its combined Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar route will operate four times weekly.

The carrier is also expanding services to the Maldives, with up to five weekly flights to Malé.

Austrian Airlines will extend its seasonal services to Mauritius and Malé until 22 and 25 April 2027 respectively, keeping both destinations in the schedule for almost a month beyond the traditional winter season.

These changes reflect the importance of long-haul leisure destinations within the group's wider network strategy, particularly where demand extends beyond conventional seasonal boundaries.

European network adds destinations and frequencies

Alongside its intercontinental expansion, Lufthansa Group is introducing additional European services and strengthening established routes.

Lufthansa will resume daily flights between Frankfurt and Dubrovnik using Airbus A320-family aircraft. SWISS will add Toulouse to its network, operating twice weekly from Zurich between 25 June and 23 August.

Austrian Airlines will introduce a seasonal Vienna–Beirut connection from June to September and continue expanding its Mediterranean leisure offering. Greece will remain a particular priority, with the airline planning the largest Greek destination portfolio within Lufthansa Group.

Brussels Airlines will add Evenes in northern Norway to its summer programme and increase frequencies to Porto, Heraklion, Zakynthos and Funchal.

SWISS will also operate additional flights to several European cities, including Budapest, Hamburg, Paris, Nice, Bremen and Niš.

ITA Airways will expand its domestic Italian network with a new Rome Fiumicino–Verona service from 28 March 2027, providing additional connections through the Italian capital.

Eurowings will publish its summer 2027 programme separately.

More opportunities for international travel distribution

The network expansion provides additional options for travel agencies, tour operators and corporate travel managers, particularly on routes linking Europe with the Americas and Asia.

New nonstop services to Columbus, Phoenix and Edmonton will reduce the need for connections through other North American gateways. The Rome–Caracas route adds a direct European connection to Venezuela, while additional flights to Brazil and the Dominican Republic expand capacity to established South American and Caribbean markets.

For incoming tourism operators, the changes are relevant not only because of the new destinations but also because of the additional connections available through Lufthansa Group's European hubs. Higher frequencies can provide greater flexibility when designing itineraries, arranging onward travel and accommodating different departure dates.

Stefan Kreuzpaintner, Senior Vice President Commercial Customer Offer at Lufthansa Group, described the programme as the group's largest route expansion in years, intended to provide customers with more choice and improved connectivity.

The summer 2027 schedule marks a substantial investment in network development following the disruptions of the pandemic years. With new intercontinental destinations, increased frequencies and additional aircraft capacity, Lufthansa Group is seeking to strengthen its position across both business and leisure travel markets while extending its reach through Europe's major aviation hubs.
