Holland America Line is preparing a special 28-day cruise to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Pan American World Airways, one of the most influential airlines in international aviation history. Departing Miami on October 30, 2027, the Pan Am 100th Anniversary Legendary Voyage will take passengers through the Caribbean and Central America, following parts of the historic routes once operated by the airline’s famous flying boats.
The voyage aboard Zuiderdam will combine traditional cruising with a programme dedicated to the history of international air travel. Aviation historians, former Pan Am employees and industry experts will share stories about the airline’s pioneering achievements, while specially developed dining experiences will recreate elements of the service culture associated with its golden age. Selected shore excursions will explore destinations that played important roles in Pan Am’s early international network.
The anniversary sailing reflects the growing interest in travel experiences built around historical themes and cultural heritage. Rather than focusing exclusively on conventional sightseeing, Holland America Line is connecting the destinations on its itinerary with the development of international aviation. The programme will examine how Pan Am helped establish connections between North America, the Caribbean and Latin America, opening new possibilities for international travel during the twentieth century.
Aviation history comes aboard Zuiderdam
A central element of the cruise will be a series of presentations exploring Pan Am’s history, aircraft, employees and international operations. The programme brings together speakers with different perspectives on the airline’s development and its influence on modern travel.
Actor and storyteller Willie Aames will discuss Pan Am’s pioneering years, including the remarkable journey of the Pacific Clipper during the Second World War. Linda Freire, chair and co-founder of the Pan Am Museum Foundation, will share experiences from her career with the airline and examine its international workforce and corporate culture.
Additional presentations will feature aviation historian and storyteller Steve Gray, Pan Am Museum Foundation vice chairman David Hinson and travel industry specialist David Kliman. Their contributions will cover subjects ranging from the airline’s early flying boats and South American routes to its approach to passenger service.
The programme will also recreate aspects of Pan Am’s historic Clipper Club, the airline’s network of exclusive airport lounges. These facilities offered passengers dedicated spaces for relaxation, dining and social interaction before departure or between flights.
Holland America Line plans to incorporate elements of this atmosphere into the onboard experience, allowing passengers to explore an aspect of premium air travel that helped shape expectations of international hospitality.
“Pan Am helped redefine what it meant to travel, turning the journey into an experience filled with discovery, connection and a sense of occasion,” said Paul Grigsby, vice president of itinerary planning and deployment for Holland America Line.
Historic airline cuisine returns to the menu
The anniversary theme will extend to the ship’s restaurants and bars, where selected dishes and cocktails will draw inspiration from menus served during Pan Am’s most celebrated decades.
The culinary programme includes classic dishes such as shrimp cocktail with Louis dressing, filet mignon with traditional accompaniments and Dover sole baked in puff pastry with crabmeat filling. Other selections include eggplant cannelloni with asparagus risotto and Grand Marnier soufflé.
These dishes reflect the elaborate meal service once associated with premium international flights, particularly during an era when onboard dining formed an important part of the travel experience.
Special cocktails will also reference the airline’s history. The Pan Am Cocktail combines white rum, Campari, orgeat, lemon juice and egg white, while the Clipper Cocktail draws on a drink historically served aboard flying boats.
The gastronomic programme is intended to complement the historical presentations, offering passengers another way to experience the atmosphere of international travel during Pan Am’s heyday.
Craig Carter, CEO of Pan Am Global Holdings, said the anniversary cruise would bring together the traditions of two established travel brands.
“Not only is the cruise itinerary reminiscent of our early days of the Flying Clippers, but the onboard experience we are creating with Holland America will bring to life a special time in the history of travel,” Carter explained.
Caribbean excursions follow historic flight routes
The connection between aviation history and the destinations visited will be particularly visible during selected shore excursions. Holland America Line has developed special tours that explore locations associated with Pan Am’s operations in the Caribbean and Central America.
In Cartagena, Colombia, passengers can discover the city’s historic international appeal during an excursion featuring classic roadsters, local cuisine and stories about its reputation as a centre of the emerald trade.
At Colón in Panama, an excursion combines the Agua Clara Locks with the Panama Canal Railway. Both landmarks illustrate the development of transport infrastructure that helped connect the region with international markets and travellers.
On Antigua, visitors can explore Shirley Heights, a historic lookout point overlooking the harbour. The excursion connects the location with the navigational challenges faced by early Pan Am crews operating in the Caribbean.
A particularly direct link to the airline’s history awaits passengers in Trinidad and Tobago. At Chaguaramas, the former Pan Am flying boat base, visitors can explore the area where the airline’s Clippers once operated.
The excursion also includes the Chaguaramas Military History & Aerospace Museum, providing additional context about the development of aviation in the Caribbean.
These destination experiences are designed to place Pan Am’s history within the wider development of regional transport, tourism and international connections.
The 28-day roundtrip cruise from Miami will depart on October 30, 2027, coinciding with the centenary celebrations of Pan American World Airways. By combining historical storytelling, themed hospitality and destination-focused excursions, Holland America Line is positioning the voyage as a specialised travel experience for aviation enthusiasts, cruise passengers and travellers interested in the history of international tourism.
