Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas has announced the
launch of its first long-haul route, marking a new phase in the airline’s
international expansion strategy. From 8 July 2026, the airline will operate
direct flights between Rio de Janeiro’s RIOgaleão – Tom Jobim International
Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
The new service will run three times per week and
represents the airline’s first non-stop connection between the two cities. The
route was developed in cooperation with the City of Rio de Janeiro as part of
broader efforts to strengthen the destination’s international connectivity.
Wide-body aircraft enable long-haul expansion
The new route follows GOL’s recent decision to
introduce wide-body aircraft into its fleet, allowing the airline to operate
longer intercontinental flights and offer enhanced passenger comfort on
long-haul services.
GOL has made significant investments in Rio de
Janeiro, totaling about $1.2 billion in local assets. The airline currently
operates more than 30 domestic and international routes from the city,
contributing to regional employment and economic activity.
Strengthening links between two major travel hubs
By connecting Rio de Janeiro directly with New York,
GOL aims to strengthen travel links between two important tourism and business
centers in the Americas while expanding travel options for passengers across
the continent.
The new route was officially announced during a press
event at RIOgaleão Airport attended by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da
Silva, Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes, ABRA CEO Adrian Neuhauser and GOL CEO
Celso Ferrer, among other officials.
Tickets for the Rio de Janeiro–New York flights are
now available through GOL’s website and mobile app.
