G Adventures identifies eight emerging travel destinations for 2027

G Adventures has identified eight destinations and regions expected to attract growing interest in 2027, with improved air connections, changing visa regulations and demand for culturally immersive experiences shaping its outlook. The small-group tour operator's annual forecast covers China, Central Asia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Dominica, the Seychelles, Greece and the Balkans.

The selection reflects a strategy of directing travellers beyond established tourism centres and towards destinations where local communities can benefit more directly from visitor spending. Rather than focusing exclusively on countries with rapidly expanding tourism infrastructure, G Adventures is highlighting regions that offer opportunities for small-group exploration, locally operated accommodation and activities involving residents.

Booking figures provide some indication of the changing demand. The company reports a 165% increase in bookings to Uzbekistan, while China has recorded growth of 52% following expanded visa-free entry arrangements. Bosnia and Herzegovina has also attracted considerably more interest, with bookings up 59%, compared with a 15% increase for Albania. These figures represent G Adventures' own booking trends rather than overall national tourism growth.

China and Central Asia gain momentum

China is among the destinations receiving the most extensive programme expansion. Following changes to visa requirements, G Adventures has introduced nine additional itineraries, including products within its National Geographic Journeys and Signature collections.

One of the new options is the 19-day Signature: China From the Great Wall to Shangri-La. The itinerary includes Dunhuang's Mogao Grottoes and the historic Yumen Pass, offering a perspective on China's Silk Road heritage alongside accommodation in desert lodges inspired by traditional fortresses.

Central Asia is experiencing even stronger growth within the operator's portfolio. Uzbekistan's 165% booking increase has helped make the region the most-booked destination area globally for G Adventures' National Geographic Signature collection.

The itinerary The Stans: The Ultimate Silk Road Adventure combines several Central Asian landscapes and cultural experiences. Travellers visit Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan and the Fan Mountains of Tajikistan, with local homestays and workshops focused on traditional yurt construction forming part of the programme.

These itineraries illustrate a broader shift towards journeys that combine major historical sites with less frequently visited rural areas.

Sri Lanka is another destination benefiting from improved international air access. G Adventures has developed two new itineraries for 2027, including the 12-day Sri Lanka Encompassed. The programme features accommodation in nature chalets in Digana, guided walks through farming communities and cooking experiences with local residents.

Island destinations move beyond conventional resort tourism

In the Caribbean, G Adventures is drawing attention to Dominica, where a new international airport is expected to open in 2027. The operator sees the planned improvement in accessibility as an opportunity to encourage longer stays rather than visits limited to cruise ship excursions.

Its Geluxe programmes focus on active experiences, including hiking to Trafalgar Falls and responsibly managed swimming excursions involving the island's resident sperm whales in a protected marine environment.

The Seychelles are being promoted through a similar approach. Instead of concentrating on conventional resort holidays, G Adventures has developed an eight-day Seychelles Geluxe itinerary covering Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.

Activities include hiking, kayaking and catamaran excursions, allowing travellers to experience several islands and their natural environments. Encounters with the archipelago's giant tortoises are among the distinctive attractions highlighted by the operator.

New Zealand also features in the 2027 selection. G Adventures expects renewed interest associated with major film productions and the planned expansion of Air New Zealand's regional network.

Its North Island Multisport itinerary includes two nights at Blue Duck Station, a remote conservation property involved in protecting the endangered whio, or blue duck. The programme combines outdoor activities with an introduction to local conservation efforts.

Northern Greece and the Balkans offer alternatives

In Europe, G Adventures is placing particular emphasis on destinations beyond the most heavily visited Mediterranean holiday areas.

Northern Greece is being promoted as an alternative to conventional island-based itineraries. The Hiking Northern Greece programme explores traditional mountain villages and the landscapes surrounding Mount Olympus, combining walking activities with cultural encounters.

The Balkans are also attracting increasing demand. According to G Adventures, bookings for Bosnia and Herzegovina have risen by 59%, while Albania has recorded growth of 15%.

The itinerary Hiking in Albania, Kosovo & Montenegro connects mountain landscapes across three countries, including Albania's Valbona Valley and Kosovo's Rugova Canyon. Accommodation in family-run guesthouses is intended to ensure that a greater proportion of tourism expenditure reaches local businesses.

For the travel trade, the eight destinations illustrate how operators are responding to demand for experiences that extend beyond conventional sightseeing and resort stays. Improved accessibility remains important, but the emphasis is increasingly on activities that provide direct contact with local landscapes, traditions and communities.

The 2027 selection also demonstrates that emerging travel demand is not limited to previously overlooked countries. Established destinations such as China, Greece and New Zealand can generate new opportunities through itineraries that introduce less familiar regions and different ways of travelling.
