Florida retained its position as the largest
recreational boating market in the United States in 2025, according to new data
released by the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). The state
recorded US$5.75 billion in retail sales of new powerboats, marine engines,
trailers and accessories, leading a nationwide ranking that reflects the
enduring popularity of boating across the country.
Florida leads, Texas and Michigan follow
The ten leading boating states generated approximately
US$17.1 billion in retail sales last year, highlighting the sector's strong
economic contribution.
Texas ranked second with US$2.33 billion in sales,
benefiting from year-round boating opportunities along the Gulf Coast and on
numerous inland waterways. Michigan followed in third place with US$1.47
billion, supported by its four Great Lakes shorelines and more than 11,000
inland lakes.
North Carolina (US$1.30 billion), New York and
Minnesota (both US$1.13 billion), Wisconsin (US$1.03 billion), California
(US$998.7 million), Georgia (US$982.5 million) and Alabama (US$966.5 million)
completed the top ten.
Diverse boating experiences drive demand
The report highlights the remarkable variety of
boating opportunities available across the United States, from Atlantic and
Gulf coastlines to inland lakes, rivers and reservoirs.
Florida's year-round boating climate, Texas' coastal
and freshwater destinations, Michigan's Great Lakes, North Carolina's Outer
Banks, Minnesota's famous "Land of 10,000 Lakes" and California's
combination of Pacific harbours and mountain lakes illustrate the diversity of
recreational boating across the country.
“No matter where you live, boating offers countless
ways to enjoy the outdoors, connect with family and friends and make lasting
memories on the water,” said Frank Hugelmeyer, President and CEO of NMMA. “From
coastlines and rivers to inland lakes, these states are the top boating spots
in the U.S. where millions of Americans embrace life on the water.”
Industry promotes boating lifestyle
The findings were released by NMMA in cooperation with
Discover Boating, an initiative developed together with the Marine Retailers
Association of the Americas (MRAA). The platform provides information on boat
ownership, rental options, safety, destinations and different types of
recreational boating, aiming to make it easier for newcomers to get out on the
water.
